1965 Pontiac LeMans Convertible

1965 Pontiac LeMans Convertible

One look at this 1965 LeMans reveals why it was fashionable then and is coveted by collectors today. The stacked headlamps and recessed split-grille concept that made the 1963 full-size Pontiacs so admired was expertly integrated into the Le Mans and GTO. An upscale triple above bumper taillight treatment, and the integrated in body rear bumper frames this car very nicely.

Having undergone a full restoration 26 years ago our consignment of a 1965 Pontiac LeMans Convertible still shows well. There are areas of wear on the interior, and the exterior red and chromed trimmings are retaining their shine. Recently a new top was put on, and works just great, and it runs like a …well…LeMans racer!

Exterior
With red painted steel panels that are very straight, newly plated chrome bumpers, split grille, and of course the Pontiac beak, this car is a very nice example. Surrounding the stacked headlights are pristine bezels. Adhered to the sides are 326 badges, and 3 vertical accents in chrome on the rear quarter. Paralleling it on the bottom is a stainless rocker trim piece. Factory Pontiac Rally 1 wheels are wrapped up in black wall radials. A like new tonneau which consigner states has only been used once, (now twice as we took photos of it on!), is remaining in like new condition. On the back are horizontally ribbed taillights on either side wrapping around the midsection of the rear quarters. A horizontal ribbed shiny bend is between these taillights and adds some highlight before diving down to the rear roll pan.

Interior
With black vinyl door panels that have some added stitching we are met with excitement to get in and have our experience. Doing so reveals very nice black vinyl buckets in front and a just as nice rear bench. These chairs all have diagonal ribs in the inserts and smooth bolsters. The driver's side bucket is splitting just a bit on the seam along the delineating piping. A ribbed aluminum um paneled appliqué center console/glove box runs toward the front and sports a chromed factory shifter which emulates the Seattle Space Needle. Floating directly above this console is the original black horizontal ribbed plastic appliqué dash, with nicely restored clean gauges inserted. Just below is another horizontal ribbed panel very thin but enough to support the knobs and pulls and the ignition. The original factory AM/FM radio is within this panel too. Below is a group of aftermarket gauges and this car is equipped with R134 A/C, but it needs a recharge. Black carpeting floods the floors and all the interior is nice for being 26 years since it was restored.

Drivetrain
Underneath the solid non-scooped (not yet!) hood we have a correct 326ci V8 painted in robin egg clue for the block and valve coverings. On top a factory 2-barrel carburetor, and on back a 2-speed automatic Powerglide. The rear axle is designated as a 10-bolt 2.93 gear configuration.

Undercarriage
All clean, no surface rust, nice coat of rustproofing, and we are all structurally sound. Power drums brakes, independent front suspension, rear coil spring and 4 link suspension finish off our tour of the undercarriage. Exhaust piping looks like new.

Drive-Ability
A turn of the key and some serious horses are about to be unleashed. My decoder, muscle car expert and myself were smiling with contentment, and we hadn't even left the drop-off area. A flick of the styled automatic shifter and we can feel the car power up. We experienced a smooth ride, and it appeared that all interior features, gauges and radio were operable. And the smile continues!

A well sorted out 65 example of the iconic Pontiac LeMans. Plenty of nice smooth power, great sound, comfortable interior, and a working convertible, it does not get much better than this as my decoder and I look at each other and note people would pay to have this job! Why not check this out and leave with a fine example and a smile on your face? Excitement!
