1978 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

1978 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

A small highly maneuverable warship that typically escorted larger armed fleets is the origin of the name Corvette. At this point, the C3 generation Corvette accounts for the middle section of the brand's story and, looking back, it's a remarkably appropriate car to hold that place. With visible nods to both Chevrolet's heritage and future, the celebration was on for the 25 year anniversary of the iconic 'Vette.

Here we have for consignment a 1978 Chevrolet Corvette, which with this year's design this writer is drooling. A rounded off rear that is holding in a curved sloped greenhouse glass deck, T top and long exaggerated coke bottle side front fenders, and some two-tone silver and gray paint looking fine-o-mite!

Exterior
Beautiful two tone gray/silver covers every inch of this consigner stated 25,581 mile 3 owner car. Garage kept, and very few miles were put on this beautiful piece of automotive sculpture. A few flecks of chrome badging, polished stainless rocker highlighter panel, and window trim break up the grays nicely, and present all in very nice condition. Smoked glass T top panels can easily be removed to get a little wind in your hair, or sun on your face. Standard 1978 Corvette polished chrome wheels are wrapped by low mileage Goodyear raised white letter Eagle GT's. Rounded taillights are deeply inset into the rear neoprene and dual exhaust chrome tips stick out of the bottom.

Interior
Nicely preserved light gray stitched leather mixes with some fuzzy darker gray broadcloth and light gray carpeting for the door panels and are in keeping with the two-tone exterior. Sleek simple high back light gray leather buckets have terry cloth darker gray inserts. These flank a light gray vinyl topped and darker carpeted center console which shows nicely. It turns to black at the shift lever and the black panels are just a bit wavy around the temp sliders. This console makes its way up to the dash and takes your eye up further into the dash center, a factory AM/FM/CB radio, and a grouping of 5 essential gauges monitors the vitals of the car. The speedo and tach cluster is fronted by the original tilt wheel steering column. On the passenger's side the appearance of a glove box returns after years of its absence. Behind the buckets is ample carpeted storage with a ceiling of curved glass hatchback. Power window toggles are noted in the door panels, and good clean condition light gray carpet floods the floor and storage space.

Drivetrain
Topped by a 4-barrel Rochester Q Jet carb, the 350ci 185hp version V8 engine sits in a nicely patina bay. It is backed by the 3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. The drive train is all numbers matching and is topped off with a 3.08 position traction rear axle.

Undercarriage
Little to no surface rust on all the floor pans and underpinnings of this gray battleship. A structurally sound frame and overall nice undercarriage dominate the area. Independent SLA type suspension is on front, and the rear has full independent suspension with a frame anchored differential unit. Rear wheel position is established by 3 links: tubular axle drive shafts, transverse strut rods, and torque comoro arms. Transverse leaf springs are also here.

Drive-Ability
I clamor to get into these late 70's Vette which I have a love affair with all of them. A rolling work of art, she fires right up and runs like the wind. Excellent braking, and rail-like handling make up for the lack of power this year Vette's were stuck with thanks to the EPA. Also, the radio did not work and the heater blower would not work on high fan position.

A memory held, enjoyed, and kept with minimal driving action for the last 20+ years, is now moving on to be enjoyed by someone else. Very reasonably priced for the condition of this car, as well as the mileage, stop by and make a purchase and create some memories of your own, in this beautifully designed nicely kept example Corvette. All in 50 shades of gray…what's your safe word?
