1970 Cadillac Coupe DeVille

1970 Cadillac Coupe DeVille

The name "DeVille" is derived from the French de la ville or de ville meaning "of the town". In French coach building parlance, a coupé de ville, from the French couper (to cut) i.e. shorten or reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside seat for two and an outside seat for the driver and this smaller vehicle was intended for use in the town or city (de ville).

They say everything is bigger in Texas, although this Caddy's presence in the Classic Auto Mall showroom, this writer would beg to differ. All 18.75 feet of this bundle of Detroit iron can whisk you down the road so smoothly you will not even know you are moving, all in extra stuffed leather comfort. This golden oldie is a nicely preserved example all in working condition. Plus, it's a 2 door with black vinyl top and big chrome all around. It does not get any better than this.

Exterior
The obsession with chrome had ended and now in the mid 1960's. It was still used, but only in key points of the overall construction. This year makes use of it mostly for the bumpers. This gold iridescent repaint is not without the chrome jewelry in that the massive bumpers, horizontal dual headlights and vertical tail lights on the ends of the rear quarters, and it all presents in nice condition. The black vinyl top is also in good condition as are all window trimmings. Some metal on the trunk deck just around the top is seen with the beginnings of bubbling. The trunk when popped shows the lining in the throws of some dry rot, and consigner states there are small holes in the floor. Never fear though, there is still room for the mother in law's 13 bags she's bringing on her 6 weeks stay at your house.

Interior
Inside makes use of avocado molded vinyl door panels, with a horizontal area of higher maple wood appliqué. A brushed stainless panel in the armrest houses the power windows, locks and mirror toggle. With plenty of padding and wrapped in medium gold leather we see a split bench in front, and a full bench in the rear, major center flip up and down armrest, one is tempted to ask “wheres the damn remote?” Talk about convenience options, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats, and climate control. All at the touch of a button. Also added an aftermarket AM/FM/CD/Satellite capable stereo residing below the dash and just above it in the dedicated smoker's option above the center dash. A hidden lighter, and dual ashtray convenience from a time when smoking was still safe. Seen also is more of the nicely stained tiger maple added in as accenting. Beautiful thick pile antique gold carpeting is on all floors and is pretty clean and unfaded. The above headliner shows a bit of smudging and slight wear.

Drivetrain
Seated in what appears to be an unrestored engine bay, an 8.2 liter Eldorado 500ci V8 topped with a 4-barrel carburetor, and attached to a 3-speed Turbo Hydramatic transmission, shifts smoothly, and even saves gas…. as if you care! On the back is a 10-bolt 2.93 rear axle.

Undercarriage
The smooth ride courtesy the independent coil spring front suspension, and 4 link with coil springs on the rear is nicely presented with road dirt patina and a smattering of surface and some invasive rust noted. Power disc brakes for the front and power drums for the rear and a like new exhaust system is seen snaking its way rearward on this large and in-charge undercarriage.

Drive-Ability
She fired right up and after a nice warmup it gave me a nice slow boil on the test track…meaning nice acceleration, good handling for a large vehicle, and ultra-smooth ride. Braking is top notch, and comfort and conveniences are all in working order.

A resprayed exterior that is iridescent, nice chrome and brite work exterior, and original leather interior car with loads of convenience options, vinyl hard topper, wrapping an original unrestored engine bay, and underside/undercarriage. That about sums it up, except for its very special in its design, size and overall condition and deserves a serious look.
