1968 Ford Mustang Convertible

1968 Ford Mustang Convertible

The 1969 Mustang was an important year for the classic Ford pony car for many reasons, including some major changes in the engine specifications and power. The styling of the 68 car was a combination of refining the new from last year body style and the addition of federally mandated safety changes, including rear side marker lights. Changes for the 68 Mustang's interior were minor, overall trim detail changed very little, however due to tightening national safety regulations, a new collapsing steering column was added in Mustangs, as well as other cars of the day and was designed to have a crush zone to absorb some of the shock of a (possibly non seat belted ) driver in an impact.

For your consideration, a 1968 Mustang in Sunlit Gold that caught the eye of our consignor who would oogle this car on his daily commute to work as the car sat at a garage with a for sale sign on it. As luck would have it, one day it was raining, and the car was pulled inside the garage. Our consignor stopped in and got to really view the car and how well it was taken care of. Over the course of a few months and multiple stops to discuss the car and price, however, the owner at that time was very attached. One day the car was up on the lift and after seeing the undercarriage our consignor decided that this was the car for him. A price agreement was reached and the rest as they say, is history.

Exterior
The beneficiary of a restoration over 15 years ago, this pony is still showing proud with only very minor rust bubbling and a few small scrapes. Sunlit Gold covers this straight body with well minded gaps and a black canvas convertible top adds just the right contrast when in the raised position. Complete with the iconic mustang hockey stick cove that ends just in front of the rear wheels and a stainless rocker trim panel for some extra bling, this Mustang draws our eyes to it from a mile away. 14" chrome styled steel wheels round out that package and are wrapped in raised white letter rubber.

Interior
A swing of the door and we are met with front bucket seats and a rear bench that shine like the showroom and welcome you to get in and drive. A chrome T handle floor shifter proudly sits on the hump which is covered by gold carpet that has slight fading on top of the hump. An original and very clean dash fronts the new for 1968 collapsible steering column. The dash contains its original instrument cluster and the addition of a small tachometer and an AM/FM/Cassette player. Gold steel and vinyl make up the door panels and are looking just fab with their chrome door handles and window cranks. Black Mustang logoed floor mats protect the carpet and provide the same gold and black contrast as the exterior.

Drivetrain
The correct 289ci V8 resides within the original and well restored engine bay. An aluminum intake manifold has a Holley 4bbl carb on top and then the icing on the cake is the chrome air cleaner assembly. On the back is a C4 3-speed automatic and putting power to the ground is a Ford 8" axle assembly.

Undercarriage
A well restored and used undercarriage presents with no invasive rust and only minor surface rust on the suspension components. Drum brakes are seen all around, and dual exhaust sends spent fossils thru Turbo mufflers to announce the V8's melody. All good down below.

Drivability
One of the rites of summer here at the Classic Auto Mall is getting to cruise the test track with the top down. We were thwarted on this as the top pump does indeed run but there are sounds of fluid gurgling indicating a leaking line or cylinder. On the track the car performed flawlessly and handled everything we threw at it. All functions were operational other than the top.

A well restored and sorted out car that caught the eye of our consignor and made him fall in love. A minor repair and this car can offer you years of top down smiles and all the notoriety that ownership of a classic Mustang brings.
