1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza

1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza

The first Corvair concept vehicle debuted at the 1954 General Motors Autorama, six years prior to its official 1960 model year release. Corvair is the 1st and only mass-produced American vehicle offering an air-cooled rear engine design, unibody construction, factory turbo-charging, and 4-wheel independent suspension.

For consignment, this engineering marvel was for 1965 called by Car and Driver “…undoubtedly the sexiest-looking American car of the new crop and possibly one of the most handsome cars in the world.” Almost 2 million Corvairs were made during their 1960-69 run. This consignment has good paint, an interior that needs some TLC on the front bucket seats, and just a wonderfully detailed engine bay. A mere 27,136 miles are clocked on.

Exterior
The Willow Green respray paint looks good. In a few areas there is some rust bubbling and underlying rust at the trim and metal seam on top of the windshield. Chrome trim and brite work suffers just a bit from some slight denting and pitting. All badging is all there and some trimmings particularly the bezels for the taillights are showing rusting. In the front trunk it is clean with just slight surface rust. 14 inch wheels and thin white wall rubber is on all 4 corners, and capped with standard Corvair hubcaps.

Interior
Black vinyl buckets in front and a rear bench sporting the same pattern as the front buckets, make up the passenger seating. Bucket seats have some tears between the bolsters and inserts. The back bench presents like new. The original unrestored dash is up front and shows off with a trio of deep inset gauges and a right mounted dash shifter that bleeds 1960s! A panel replaces the radio in a black center panel, along with the ashtray and lighter as well as the ignition. On the passenger's side more silver for the glove box panel and there are a few areas of faded touchup hiding former scratches. Black carpeting for the floors and its nicely preserved, and above the black smooth vinyl headliner is torn and sagging.

Drivetrain
To the back of the car we go and see a 164ci flat 6 cylinder engine with dual 1-barrel carburetor attached. A 2-speed Powerglide automatic is the transmission. And a 3.55 axle is on. As noted, the engine is low mileage and looks the part.

Undercarriage
Areas of surface rust, some heavy on the suspension parts are seen. Floor pans are mostly rust free, but on the driver's side a seam has come apart from the mid section. All other panels remain structurally strong. Drum brakes are all around, as is independent suspension.

Drive-Ability
This car starts nicely and performs like it should for the Monza trim. Bias free panic stopping, and handling is nimble for this rear engine car. The signal stalk must be held down for the left to operate and the brake lights stay on.

A low original mileage Corvair that does need some cosmetic TLC. Some original paperwork comes with this car, and the car is mechanically sound.
