1926 Ford Model T Pickup

1926 Ford Model T Pickup

The first pickup truck arrived just after the beginning of the 20th century, as the world's first pickup truck was actually a variant of Ford's classic Model T. Ford had no idea what they'd stumbled onto at the time. Their invention quickly became popular and would later evolve into America's top truck. Although the cabs in these Model Ts were new, the pickup boxes used were carried over from the Model T.

For consignment, a 1926 Model T pickup. A few upgrades and modernization to this truck but keeping it looking with as much originality was a key to this build and restore.

Exterior
From the rear window forward, this is definitely a Model T as it has all the fixins'. Black radiator surround, fender mounted round headlights, a cowled hood, curved fenders and running boards. From this point rearward, the back is pure pickup with the wood bed and stake sides, tailgate, and the other rounded rear finder. Fenders in this truck are wonderfully patina black, and the bed, cabin and front of the car have been painted to look like aged red. On top of the bed are oak stakes to add some height to the cargo area. 21-inch wood spoked wheels are all around and wrapped by radial tires. Yes RADIAL TIRES!

Interior
Under the black canvas top is a newly covered black vinyl bench all smooth and wonderfully padded. Black rubber covers the floors, and upfront a red painted metal dash houses the ignition and an Americar gauge within a shiny metal oval. Below this dash are a trio of modern gauges. The big original steering column is still on with the wheel, and some turn signal light switches to the side. KISS is the key here!

Drivetrain
A 2.3 liter Inline 4 Ford engine is under the cowl hood. It is not obviously original and produces 88hp. On top is a single 2-barrel carburetor. It is cooled by a new aluminum radiator and has a Ford Pinto transmission which is automatic on back. Also, a Ford Pinto rear end which has been adapted to fit the spoked wheels and brakes is now on.

Undercarriage
All good with transverse leaf springs all round, along with custom made front and rear wishbone suspension. Drum brakes and new wiring can be seen in this all clean and rust-free undercarriage, now modernized!

Drive-Ability
A very easy drive now with the automatic transmission, nice acceleration, and good braking. The 2-barrel carburetor adds some pop, and it's a good solid old car.

Made to appear old and original, this truck is a wonderful driver, and could be used every day and prove reliable. An early fully functional version of the 1926 pickup truck.
