1938 Ford Standard Coupe

I'm just mad about saffron
A-saffron's mad about me
I'm-a just mad about saffron
She's just mad about me
They call me mellow yellow (Quite rightly)...

For consignment, a car bathed in yellow, and like the color, this car packs a powerful emotional punch, but it's a deceptively complicated color. It can don the shade of soft butter or that of vibrant daffodil, conveying joy, vitality, and optimism, (think warm sunshine and little singing canaries). But enough of this BS, and let's get to this 1938 custom Street Rodder.

Exterior
That leading V grille is now painted yellow and is flanked by frenched round head lighting on either side. The bumper has been shaved and now we see the curvaceous V grille and corresponding undulating lower fenders up front. These curve upward and rearward to a running board and eventually melt into the curved English wheel shaped rear render which has a monster rear tire within its confines. A split glass front windshield is trimmed in black, and the roof is a 5-window setup with curved to the C pillar rear side glass and a split oval for the back. From this point the curved downward trunk takes over and is framed on either side by an elongated rear fender and lower roll pan. Teardrop taillights framed in yellow bezels are on however the rear bumper is shaved. Some red pinstripe flourishes are on the front of the hood, and trunk lid. In front are 5 spoked Rocket Strike wheels and on back 15-inch big red steel wheels are wrapped by 31x18.5-15 rubber grabbers. Black side pipes peek out of either side, and this car is no mellow yellow but rather a PA plated “Phat 38”.

Interior
A turn of the yellow handles and we shake hands with vertical black vinyl in tuck and roll from. Shiny handles are within this field. Moving inside black vinyl seats with vertically stitched panels for inserts and big hold 'em in bolsters are bucketed in. A rally steering wheel and column front the yellow dash, now with AutoMeter black-faced gauges and bezels. These lineup in front of the driver and in the center smaller gauges cascade downward from the center. A yellow ball knobbed Lokar shifter is floating in black carpeting, and above a light creme headliner shows a few wrinkles but is overall tight. The trunk has been tubbed to accommodate the rear tires and now houses the fuel cell.

Drivetrain
With the V shaped bulbous hoods it seems a wonder whether anything can fit in this space but alas a 350 GM crate engine fits in nicely. It is topped by an Edelbrock performer intake manifold, and 4-barrel carburetor. A round shiny air cleaner cover topping it off gleams and vies for your attention in this clean black engine bay. On back is a TH350 3-speed automatic which throws power to a 10-bolt 3.73 rear axle. Headers and a Flowmaster exhaust give these 350 cubes a melodious tone from either side. A new aluminum radiator keeps things cool, and new wiring from American Automotive shores up the electrics on this rod.

Undercarriage
Underneath square stock steel is the framing and shows only surface rust. Front suspension is courtesy a Mustang II which is a favorite for these hot rods. On the back is a 4 link with yellow painted coil overs. Power disc brakes are reserved for the front only and power drums adorn the back biggies.

Drive-Ability
She fired right up with a nice growl, and on the test track we could not get enough of that 4-barrel feeding those 8 bangers, and she took off! Handling and braking were first rate, and comfort was nicely obtained with the tilt column. I noticed the tachometer was inoperable.

What a nice build for a 38 Standard Coupe from Henry's factory to your driveway. Anything but mellow yellow, so come have a look at this potential hot rodder. Pony up there sunshine! No one will think of you as daffy (dil…tongue firmly in cheek!)
