1967 Pontiac LeMans Convertible
1967 Pontiac Lemans Convertible
Ask Pontiac fans about the division's offerings, and the first thing you'll notice is a smile appearing on their faces. Even after 50 years, those cars remain exceptionally popular. Today, average sale prices of the intermediate-sized Pontiacs, like the GTO and LeMans, at times outpace the same model other-year Pontiacs of the era, and it appears that they have been sought-after since their introduction. This, of course, includes the sporty LeMans, which was introduced on the 1962 Tempest platform. It graduated to its own series in 1963, and by 1964 had grown from a senior compact Y-body into a mid-sized A-body model.
One look at this 1967 LeMans reveals why it was fashionable then and is coveted by collectors today. The stacked headlamps and recessed split-grille concept that made the 1963 full-size Pontiacs so admired was expertly integrated into the LeMans and GTO. An upscale triple above bumper taillight treatment, and the integrated in body rear bumper frames this car very nicely.
With Regimental Red painted steel panels that are very straight, and chrome bumpers, split grille and of course the Pontiac nose, this car is a very nice example. Surrounding the stacked headlights are pristine bezels. Adhered to the sides are 326 badges, and 3 vertical accents in chrome on the rear quarter. A full-blown sea of red down the sides and on the bottom is a stainless rocker trim piece. Pontiac Rally II wheels add highlight to the bottom with the rocker trim and a new white canvas convertible top with a clear plastic rear window finish it all off.
With red vinyl door panels that have some added stitching we are met with excitement to get in and have our experience. Doing so reveals very nice red vinyl buckets in front and a just as nice rear bench. A wood appliqué center console/glovebox runs toward the front and sports the block knob topped shifter. Floating directly above this console are 2 aftermarket gauges which keep track of oil pressure and water temp. Above this is the original wood appliqué dash, with nice clean gauges inserted. Noted is an aftermarket AM/FM/Bluetooth stereo. A red carpet covers the floors and is protected by Pontiac logo floormats.
Underneath the long flat hood is a 1967 326ci V8, (YN coded), engine that is correct for the car. Supple hoses fill this original looking engine bay and we note power steering as well. The engine is topped by a stock 2bbl carburetor and air cleaner assembly. This mill pushes around 250 horses back thru a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, and further back to catch it is a 10-bolt 3.08 rear axle. A new thermostat, radiator, water pump, heater core, belts and hoses help keep things cool.
A spattering of surface rust shows on the frame and suspension components. The floors present as rust free with a coating of what appears to be factory applied undercoating. Headers feed into an aluminized exhaust system featuring Flowmaster muffler. Front power disc brakes, power rear drums, independent front suspension, rear coil spring suspension finish off our tour of the undercarriage.
A turn of the key and the horses are about to be unleashed. My decoder, a muscle car expert and myself are smiling with contentment and we haven't even left the drop-off area. A flick of the shifter into D and we can feel the car power up. We experienced a smooth ride, and it appeared that all interior features and gauges were functioning properly. The stereo along with the exhaust note kept the smiles continuing!
A well sorted out 67 example of the iconic Pontiac LeMans. Plenty of power, great sound, comfortable interior, and a new working convertible top, it does not get much better than this as my decoder and I look at each other and note people would pay to have this job! Add in some extra parts in the form of the original radio and a new trunk seal. Why not check this out and leave with a fine example and a smile on your face? Excitement!
