1962 Chevrolet Impala SS

1962 Chevrolet Impala SS

A fair amount of the classics that come through the doors here at Classic Auto Mall are of a caliber that is more show than actual go. These are all wonderful cars, however when you were a kid did you dream of trailering your car to shows, turning the key only when the sun is shining, and only driving short distances if any for fear the odometer would turn an important milestone? Bet you did not, and there have been several consignors coming through our door that are unloading their classics for that very reason, they are tired of that routine.

If you want a great runner, you can hop in and drive it on any trip short or long, and if it rains, roll the windows up! This is the car for you, if you are a mid century modern bow tie fan, and don't want the hassle of rummaging through endless junkyards for parts, or spending money on expensive repairs, the consignor has already done this for you. A beautifully restored Chevrolet Impala, with a 283ci V8, Roman Red paint with an Ermine White top which is pristine, and literally a 59 year old everyday driver, look no further.

Exterior
Bathed in endless depth Roman Red, the steel straight evenly gapped panels are wave free, and fit like it just left the factory. Some inclusions are seen throughout upon close inspection, but it remains shiny and looking great from 5 feet. All brightwork is beautiful, and correct badging is seen overall. There is a nice white contrasting trim spear with a gold honeycombed pattern inset, running from bow to stern…now that's 60's cool! Also, a white top is another accenting looking fab! The car sports an SS Logo on the rear quarter panel, along with IMPALA badge in grandmother's handwriting. Curved front glass with a blue sun filtering coating at the top stretches across the back of the hood and shows in very good condition. Also adding to the 60s coolness are dual swept back antennae chromed and mounted to the top of the rear quarter. Knockoff styled wheel coverings are on all 4 corners adding accenting to the lower portion of this beautiful restoration.

Interior
Deep red vinyl with striped seat inserts and smooth bolsters cover the front low back buckets and rear bench. On the upper portions of all the chairs are chrome buttoned and stitched rectangular insert panels, also in smooth red vinyl. Door panels take on the square version of this button seat motif, and show a litany of chrome door actuators, window cranks, and buttons all of which present in good condition. An inverted V design dash utilizes machined aluminum with small squares design, and sparkles with chromed knobs and a vintage AM radio. The original deep red plastic clad over chrome emblazoned steering wheel fronts the quintessential Chevy styled speedo, mileage indicator and a trio of round gauges just above the steering column. Above is a tighty whitey headliner, and below very clean red, red carpeting. I can also note the trunk is clean enough and probably large enough to live in, and is wrapped with textured trunk paint, all looking wonderful!

Drivetrain
A 283ci 195hp V8 replaces the original engine and is draped with a single intake clean black air cleaner covering, as well cast aluminum chrome valve covers. It inhales through a 2-barrel carburetor, and exhales through a pristine exhaust system. In between sits a 2-speed power glide transmission, rebuilt. The whole engine bay is showroom clean, and ready to have dinner served on it! Way back is a stock 3.08 rear axle which has been totally rebuilt.

Undercarriage
Consigner states that during the frame off restoration new floorpans replaced the old, inner rocker panels, new trunk floor well and new quarter panels. Red and black paint compete to show off the nicest paint job underneath, and it turns out we now have absolute showroom, better then factory, (factories do not put more than a touch of spray on floor pans!), condition. Power disc brakes are up front, and power drums for the back.

A careful and painstaking restoration by the consignor which has taken years to complete, is now here for the taking for another's pleasure. There is nothing more heart wrenching than losing one of the loves of your life, however solace can be taken that this one will live on and continue to put smiles on faces for another generation, as the memories of the other can bring a smile to this wonderful consignor's face. Just a beautiful example right here in front of you, (or your eyes if you are looking at your computer!).
