1927 Chevrolet Capitol Coupe

1927 Chevrolet Capitol Roadster

NO TITLE-SOLD ON A BILL OF SALE ONLY

In the latter part of 1926 Chevrolet was gearing up to make some changes due to information they had about the eventual launch of the new Ford Model A to replace the Model T that was on an 18 year run. They changed the name of their Superior V model to the Capitol AA coupe and roadster, which was a smaller car, soft top, and rumble seat. A compact car per se.

Roadster defines a vehicle that has an open top, two doors, two seats, and is made for sport. It is not a race car by any means, but it is enough to keep the average driver on the edge of his or her seat. This consignment is a 1927 Chevrolet Capitol Roadster and presents in barn find condition.

Exterior
Steel panels that do not have very much invasive rust on them, but have years of aging outside with faded paint, some surface rusting, and areas of rub off for the panels. All black, the gaps need attention, as do the fenders which are nicely curved around the surface rusted artillery wheels in solid steel form, but have plenty of dimness and dings to deal with. The front of the car has a cowled hood and a once shiny radiator surround, that currently is faded, dimpled, and very dulled. This is the same for the headlights flanking either side of the radiator that are supported on the outside by the front fenders, dulled trim rings and patina black shells. The passenger compartment is a squared off door that has the windscreen in front and the other door on the side, and a canvas top which is currently rotted with no rear panel attached. The landau bars are intact, and these snake towards the rear deck which hides a rumble seat, also in need of major restoration. On back is the fuel tank, round steel bar bumpers and the spare tire mounting.

Interior
The door panels have been ravaged by time and seen a fair amount of water damage. These are covered in a black painted canvas material which is torn and very faded and dirty. A former bench seat sits nicely within the small cabin and has some wide tuck and roll black leather which is very cracked and worn through in several areas, particularly on the seat part which is just covered with a blanket. The dash is faded, rusted, and painted cream. It has the standard center round speedometer and odometer flanked on either side by oval gauges and knobs and a dash light above. The floors have a combination of wood and original metal that is showing some invasive rust throughout. The rumble seat is very worn, filled with dirt and will need a full restoration to be usable.

Drivetrain
Under the unrestored cowled hood within the surface rusted engine bay is a 171ci Inline 4-cylinder. It has a 1-barrel carburetor and a 3-speed manual transmission on the back. The rear axle has a 3.82 gear ratio.

Undercarriage
A fairly heavy coating of surface rust abounds on all the underside parts. There is some invasive rust forming on the driver's side where the floor pan rolls upward to the body, right next to a framed area. Leaf springs are on all 4 corners and mechanical drums are on the rear axle.

So, we have a neat looking design car in search of an ambitious restorer that can bring this car back from its years of neglect. The basics are all here one just needs to put a bit of sweat equity to make it a showpiece. A diamond in the rough.
