1965 Ford Mustang Fastback

1965 Ford Mustang Fastback

The Mustang was originally available as either a hardtop or convertible, but during the car's early design phases a fastback model was strongly considered. In 1965, a newly introduced fastback body version with its swept-back rear glass and distinctive ventilation louvers became available.

Imagine having the coolest new car on the block in 1965, the Ford Mustang. Then ramp that up and imagine the coolest version of said wildly popular Mustang, that being the Fastback version. Couple that with a 289ci V8 and strap a 4-barrel carburetor on and now you are living large. One of the earliest built versions of this ultimate cool, we give you this Fastback to grace your driveway and also give you the ability to turn the key then drive away. Who wouldn't want this fully restored version of one of the most popular cars ever built.

Exterior
From the galloping pony on the front honeycomb grille, to the fog lights which frame the nose vents that sit beside the single headlight, all the way back to the sloping rear roof line with the iconic louvers this beautiful pony car possesses little faults. It's all about awe with the near perfect Ivy Green respray, restored chrome and brite-work, and classic American Racing 15-inch 5 spoke wheels wrapped in BFG rubber. Then for giggles, let's throw in a tasteful white tri bar racing stripe right above the rocker. Bringing up the rear is a galloping pony emblazoned gas filler cap, chrome encircled through holes for chrome tipped exhaust. It just does not get any better than this.

Interior
Hold that last thought…because throw open the doors and reveal a pristine Palomino colored vinyl interior seating setup of 2 bomber style buckets. In back a large fold down flat carpeted hinged floor can be magically transformed into a rear 2 plus 2 Palomino covered vinyl bucket/bench. This is grounded by fade free carpet and a simple long stem Hurst gear shift lever between the buckets up front. Looking at the dash, we see a wonderful amalgamation of padded vinyl topper, and palomino colored painted lower with a black vinyl panel in the center of the steering wheel. This sports new chrome bezeled Vintage circular gauges flanking a larger speedometer and tachometer in the center. A vintage Mustang AM/FM/Cassette radio is neatly mounted where the original radio was at one time.

Drivetrain
A pop of the hood and you'll have to squint, because there is so much bling you will barely be able to stand it! A proper 289ci V8 which has been bored over .030 with a hydraulic roller cam with .512 lift resides between the fenders. The heads have been ported, polished, fitted with oversized valves, screw in studs and roller rockers. This engine is dyno proven to produce 335hp. On top is a Quickfuel 750cfm 4bbl carburetor and a Crosswind intake manifold. Exhaling is now done through Tri-Y powder coated headers and JBA 2.5 inch exhaust tubing. Attached is a Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission. MSD provides the electronic distributor. All 335 horses go to the rear axle and spin the tires with a Ford 8-inch 3.55 Trac-Loc rear.

Undercarriage
It doesn't get any better than this, rust free, good floor pans, unibody seams, and no signs of any rust. Like new suspension which includes independent coil springs for the front, and leaf springs with traction bars now on for the back. Braking is front disc and rear drums and these are looking like new all around. Stainless steel mufflers should last a good long time as they are definitely rust free while power steering makes carving corners a breeze.

Drive-Ability
Slipping inside I gaze at the new instruments, crank up the radio, and I was off to the test track. Here I could feel its 335 horses pulling me forward while being pushed backwards input my seat. Smooth shifting, and rail like handling from the like new suspension parts in this car. The A/C blower was a bit too noisy for my taste. All else was perfect.

Flashback to 1965, suburbia in the driveway, hottest car to come along in years, and it's in your neighbor's driveway. Fast forward we are in the new millennium, same car in your driveway, and the car looks and performs better than it did when it left the showroom. Come on down, where we only have the coolest of the cool hanging around!
