1902 Studebaker Electric
Studebaker formally began production in earnest in 1902, and the company chose battery-powered electric vehicles because they were clean, easily recharged, and worked well in urban centers without need of refueling depots (gas stations). Studebaker Electrics were available in a variety of body styles, many of which mimicked the bodies that it had long produced for its lucrative passenger carriage line. These included the Stanhope, Victoria, and Surrey.
For consignment some early automobile history with a 1902 Studebaker Electric. This car was produced in earnest and sold mainly in urban centers where gas pumps were few and far between. Though limited miles at one time could be driven, it was more efficient and easier to maintain as an electric car, and in cities trips were generally within a few miles. Our fine example is a museum quality reproduction, painstakingly assembled by our consigner who does an in-depth study of each original car and then produces a reproduction.
Our example, reminiscent of horse drawn carriages, has a wagon- like body painted red and the Studebaker badge has made its appearance on the front of the carriage. Simple curved fenders in black with some brass accenting shield road debris from getting up into the passenger compartment. Brass carriage lights are on a stalk on either side, and a brass gear shift lever is next to the buggy seat. In front a straight black leather covered dash has a brass horn atop. White rubber tires are wrapping metal spoked wheels in black paint and gold pinstriping. On back the squared off trunk panel has brass inserts to hold luggage without marring the red paint this car is bathed in.
Keeping thing very basic, the steering mechanism is performed by moving a lever which in turn moves the front wheels side to side. This long black L shaped lever has a brass tip. The dash just houses the horn and a beautiful button and tufted buggy seat in black leather and some fine metal structure, make up the 2 seater seat. A modern rubber floor covers everything neatly, and there is a brass digital electric battery level indicator on the floor. A brake pedal is noted however this car has no brakes.
Chain driven and power comes directly through the electric motor which is within the trunk of the car. A Lesson Electric motor provides the power.
A very nice simple reproduction of Studebaker's early electric cars. This exacting reproduction does work but has no brakes.
