1970 Dodge Challenger R/T

1970 Dodge Challenger R/T

Introduced in fall 1969 for the 1970 model year, the Challenger was one of two Chrysler E-body cars, the other being the slightly smaller Plymouth Barracuda. Positioned to compete against the Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird in the upper end of the pony car market segment, it was "a rather late response" to the Ford Mustang, which debuted in April 1964. Even so, Chrysler intended the new Challenger as the most potent pony car ever, and like the less expensive Barracuda, it was available in a staggering number of trim and option levels, and with virtually every engine in Chrysler's inventory.

For consignment an original 1970 Challenger R/T, and it has the big block 383ci V8, 4-speed manual transmission, the R/T stripe and bathed in Hemi Orange. While the consignor states this is one of the Scat Pack cars, there is no documentation to prove it. Thusly named "Countess Pumpkin" by the loving consignor.

Exterior
The coke bottle design can be seen at its finest with this car with bulging fenders and a straight door in the center with a thin front end and pinched long oval grille with dual headlights. Hemi Orange paint, and R/T black stripe kit is on, and the vinyl top is showing in black and sports the larger rear glass window. On the hood is a wide satin black stripe over the orange and highlighting a dual “whale nostril” hood opening. Nice chrome trimmings for the rocker and wheel wells and the window surrounds. Bumpers are nicely preserved and shiny, as are the hood pins and deep inset black egg crate grille. R/T badges on the front grille, and rear deck, and within the stripe in knockout form. A “pinched” rear houses the horizontal tail lighting that stretches across the rear and is being framed in the bottom by a nice shiny bumper. On the rear orange roll pan are dual rectangular tailpipes tipped in chrome. Rally wheels with deep dish trim rings are wrapped in Remington raised white lettered XT-120 CTR rubber.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we've turned on the way back machine Sherman, to 1970 where black molded vinyl and plastic form the panels for the doors. A wood centered appliqué complete with the “Fratzog” badge and shiny cranks and actuator paddles. The simplistic high back buckets and rear bench make up the seating, and this is black vinyl with some tuck and roll stitched areas throughout the seats. A wood rimmed original steering wheel fronts the dash and is original in its looks and condition. A grouping of round gauges is within the dash front and all floating in a field of wood appliqué. Noted with the R/T the optional tachometer is installed. The original AM radio works, and a rare 3-speed wiper/washer option is on this car too. Lest I forget, a center console races rearward from the bottom of the dash on the hump and sports the angled wood handled Hurst pistol grip shifter and a glovebox. Clean fade free black carpeting and a tight smooth vinyl headliner complete this nicely preserved interior.

Drivetrain
Under the hood in the Hemi orange painted engine bay sits a numbers matching 383ci big block engine, (casting number 2468130, 3-11-70, and proper vin stamping), with orange intake and valve covers. A dual scooped air cleaner cover sporting its stickers is atop and filters air for a Holley 4-barrel carburetor. A numbers matching 4-speed manual A833 is on back. An 8-3/4 rear axle with new non original gears with an unknown ratio is on the back and spins the rear tires.

Undercarriage
Appearing restored with nice black undercoating covering all surfaces with no rust or even road dirt. All structurally sound under here. Power disc brakes are all around, and a nice clean rust-free exhaust system snakes its way rearward from the engine attached to the original no rust manifolds. For the suspension front torsion bars are on and on the back, leaf springs.

Drive-Ability
This 383ci big blocker fired right up, and ran smoothly. Wonderful acceleration and the manual transmission slipped smoothly into each corresponding gear. Handling was good, and a comfortable cruise can be had on the highway with this car.

Very well preserved, and anything that was not, has been expertly restored or replaced. All nooks and crannies, corners and panels, and the interior present as excellent for this R/T original. Let's go for another “spin”!
