1987 Chevrolet El Camino SS

1987 Chevrolet El Camino SS

Rumor has it that Mattel's Elliot Handler, (the 'el' in Mattel), spotted designer Harry Bradley's El Camino in the Mattel HQ parking lot and commented, “Those are some hot wheels,” coining the new name for Mattel's line of toy cars, Hot Wheels. In fact, Elliot was so impressed by Bradley's custom El Camino, he insisted that Mattel use it as a model for the first line of Hot Wheels toy cars. And the rest as they say is history.

All starting from an Australian farm wife wanting a vehicle she could use during the week on the farm and then drive it to church on a Sunday, the concept of a car with a truck bed was born. The Chevrolet El Camino, (literally translated to “The Way”), is in our massive facility and stands out as a nice example. Dressed in maroon, extra rocker fairings, a modified grille, extra chrome on the wheel wells and midline, it's a worker during the week, and churchier during the weekend, that Australian woman would be proud!

Exterior
The beneficiary of a complete ground up restoration at which time some liberties were taken to upgrade to a somewhat resto-mod treatment. This car has been fitted with an aftermarket ground effects package with reinforced mounts, along with aftermarket Monte Carlo SS/Lumina headlamps and front grille, (just a slightly smoother and aero then the original). All this is bathed in snazzy maroon paint which is a top-notch job and is very deep. Some trimmings are seen covering the edge of the wheel wells and connecting to front and rear. Decal El Camino SS badging is seen just above this trimming at the door hinges. Shiny new American Racing rims are now attached as well and are being wrapped in Kumho tires. The factory wheels and tires are residing in the bed area if you desire them. On the back of the bed is a hardshell covering in black which swoops upward near the flying buttress B pillars. A flip of this covering and we can see the bed which has a rubber liner. A few dents and dings from use are noted on the tailgates inside panel.

Interior
Completely redone, this interior retains the gray broadcloth for the split bench and it is like new as of this showing. Padded vinyl door panels are neatly tucked in and some maroon trimmings add more interest to this gray field. Chromed power window power lock and remote mirror joysticks can be seen. Upfront is a square and rectangle design gray dash with some black panel inserts and white numbered and lettered gauges. A new Sony AM/FM/CD/USB SD stereo with Kenwood speakers keeps you entertained and drowns out the rumbling exhaust if you wish to. The original steering wheel is fronting this clean dash, and gray carpeting is flooding the floors. A new gray headliner is now installed and looking perfect.

Drivetrain
This truck/car now sports a 350ci small block bowtie crate engine, topped with a Quadrajet 4bbl carburetor and a 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission on back. All is looking very nice under this hood in the clean engine bay. A 10-bolt rear axle is on the back.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust and patina are present, but all in all structurally sound underneath. Independent coil springs are on front and a 4 link with coil springs for the rear ride. Power disc brakes are in front and power drums for the rear.

Drive-Ability
A turn of the ignition and she fires up quickly. A nice acceleration on the test track, some bias free panic stopping, and smooth automatic shifting. All functions were working just swimmingly, save for the windshield washer pump. A/C blows cold and has been converted to R-134a.

Nicely improved with some aero and looks along with a new front grille and headlight setup, this is a custom example of a 1987 El Camino with a 350ci V8 crate engine and new interior. Come on down and let us show you “the way” (El Camino!)
