1972 Chevrolet Chevelle

1972 Chevrolet Chevelle

Like the Tri-Five Chevys that came before it, the Chevelle is one of those cars GM aced right out of the gate and continued to perfect. Eventually the marque became one of the strongest brands in automotive history; and at one point, with a full list of body styles, options, trim grades, color combinations, and engines which ranged from mild to outrageous, literally embodied the 'custom built' nature that defines the muscle car era.

For consignment a Chevelle with a 454ci V8, Edelbrock intake, a Holley carburetor in 4-barrel configuration and a TH350 on back. This version is a street legal racer and has a large air bump up on the hood to provide for extra O2 to burn through. It keeps the interior stock appearing but not original and has a few aftermarket gauge add ons, and of course the B&M shifter. Throw on some Centerline Auto Drag wheels and let's chew up some Fords, or for that matter with this car…nearly everything else!

Exterior
Looking very little like it did off the showroom floor in '72 this car retains its original lines in its grille and rear bumper and in between. A large scoop has been added to the hood, along with some dual wide white racing stripes and a nicely swept back rear deck. Bumper inserted taillights are within and dual exhaust tips peek out from the bottom. The Centerline Auto Drag wheels are wrapped in front by 205/65R15's and in back by 275/50R15's. All steel construction is bathed in deep blue all over for the remainder of this racer. A few smaller areas of rust bubbling through the paint (on the lower section of this car), and some chipping are noted on the metallic paint.

Interior
Looking mostly original we see black vinyl tuck and roll and some thin trimmings for the doors. Low back buckets are in front, and a black vinyl rear bench is still intact on the back seating arrangement. Slightly faded black carpeting is covering the floors and between the buckets is a B&M shifter. Dash is original but now has a large aftermarket tachometer with shift light attached and a trio of extra gauges hanging below in a shiny polished bezel panel. A Grant GT rally wheel is fronting this dash. Also, an aftermarket stereo is installed where the original once was. A black headliner is above.

Drivetrain
Opening the hood and now a 454ci V8 is stuffed inside in place of the original 307ci V8. This big block has headers, an Edelbrock intake manifold, and a 4-barrel Holley carburetor. On back is a TH350 3-speed automatic pushing power rearward to a very accommodating 10-bolt 2.73 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
Underneath we see a nice clean Flowmaster dual exhaust which is within a rust free undercoated and structurally sound free and floor pan. Independent coil springs are on front, and in back a 4 link system with more coil springs provides the ride. Power disc brakes are upfront, and power drums for the back.

Drive-Ability
Pure muscle from the fire up to the test with my foot onto it, it goes just great. A racer first, then a street car for passengers second, ready to eat up any competition you can throw at it. A nice job in the “hop up” section for performance, and all still looking much like the original. The reverse lights, horn, volt gauge and HVAC blower were nonfunctional for my test driving experience.

Boogity Boogity Boogity as they, (DW Used to say), “lets go racing”…street racing, and clean out the carbon on those 454 cubes of V8 power. Also, you can have a nice example to show and go sitting in your driveway, ready to have its key turned and you'll be off like a prom dress!
