1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Coupe

1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Coupe

Like the Tri-Five Chevys that came before it, the Chevelle is one of those cars GM aced right out of the gate and continued to perfect. Eventually, the marque became one of the strongest brands in automotive history; and at one point, with a full list of body styles, options, trim grades, color combinations, and engines which ranged from mild to outrageous, literally embodied the 'custom built' nature that defines the muscle car era.

Over the past few years, we've certainly seen some nice Chevelle SS Coupes. This example will have you singing the blues as it is all buttoned up and a former California car, now residing here in PA. It is sporting a new big block 402ci V8 and has a Holley to feed it copious amounts of gas. Paint is great, and the interior has been refreshed. Turn the key and make some smoke and noise and impress your Chevy friends and make your Ford enemies frown!

Exterior
As we gaze into the deep blue metal covered exterior our eyes skim past well minded gaps, new perfect trimmings in chrome and stainless, correct badges, dual headlights, a bumped black accented hood, tinted windows and smooth rust-free metal. I love the back design of this car with its flying buttress B pillars framing the rear glass and melting into the trunk lid with wrap around rear quarter taillights, and SS and 427 badging with a horizontal black band just above the bumper, emphasizing the “wide trac” look. Some glass beading has brought back the original 15-inch wheels which now have shiny beauty rings rings and centers, all wrapped in redline tires.

Interior
Swing the blue vinyl covered door frame open to the interior, and what do you now have? The interior! Yes, its snappy, yes, its sexy, yes, it's like new with its smooth low back vinyl buckets trimmed with chromed edging. Give the back of the car permission to place a bench that stretches from side to side for some extra passengers to enjoy your driving, and mimic the buckets, and you are in…1967 heaven. Racing through the buckets is a blue vinyl molded center console complete with a Hurst shifter. This console, ending upfront and looking at that original dash with blue padded top overhanging a stainless strip of appliqué that runs underneath from door top door. Directly in the midst of this level in front of the driver is the original instrument cluster level. The vintage style radio is in the center and button for the passenger glove box in front of the passenger seat. Then level 4 where we note a large blue metal painted panel with 5 rows of controls from A/C to outlets to heat to defrost to fan speed to just plain fresh air, and the glovebox. Then the basement if you will with a hanging trio of volts, oil pressure and water temp aftermarket gauges and a large tachometer just to its side.…bring on the oohs and aaaaahs! Also note a factory tilt steering wheel, not often seen in this era of muscle cars. Blue carpet in clean condition floods these floors and above a nicely tightened blue vinyl headliner is all good.

Drivetrain
Underneath the dual vented in chrome hood is the 402ci V8 complete with orange painted block, a Weiand intake manifold, and a 4-barrel 780cfm Holley carb atop. On back is a 5-speed manual transmission sporting a new flywheel, pressure plate and clutch disc and bearing. A 12-bolt rear is now on and has 3.73 posi gears. Exhaling is courtesy newly installed coated headers. This engine bay has just recently been repainted and detailed, and it looks like it. Also, plenty of chromed bolt ons add more candy to the bay, and certainly no corrosion.

Undercarriage
Very well preserved and restored with nicely painted black frame and unibody, new clean H pipe exhaust and mufflers, nicely preserved floor pans and the bottom end of the engine is spotless. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners, and a new fuel tank hangs from the rear under the rust free trunk deck.

Drive-Ability
Started right up and ran like a 1967 Chevelle SS with a 402ci V8 4 bbl should. Good braking, smooth shifting, and decent cornering, it can get a little happy on the back if you get too goosey with the boot. All was functioning nicely and worked on demand.

A very nice example of the 1967 Chevelle SS, with all surfaces attended to on the refresh, a powerful mill looks great within the fully restored engine bay. A new interior and lets now belt out those blues!
