1940 Chevrolet Deluxe Coupe

1940 Chevrolet Deluxe Coupe

“The Crown of Beauty Belongs to Chevrolet with New Royal Clipper Styling. Chevrolet's First again! Eye it . . . Try it . . . Buy it!”. Almost makes me want to rush to the showroom and buy it, which indeed many actually did. Along came hot rodding and one of their favorite cars to wrench on is the Special Deluxe.

With this consignment wrenching is an understatement. More like a total transformation and now we give you a fully custom rod version of the 1940 Chevy Special Deluxe. It is as fresh as a new copper penny and runs like a Swiss watch. With shaved bumpers and a custom white interior, how can you go wrong?

Exterior
Finished in Copper Metallic, this 1940 Chevy Master Deluxe shines from head to toe. Painted over brite work adds a taste of modernization while retaining the original classic line, (see the grille and modern side view mirrors). Clean metal painted black running boards span between modestly shaped fenders, which over time later models will do away with. Just a few dings out of the paint, and a small area of flake off on the driver's rear quarter and some gaps chip-offs are noted on this point. The curved trunk lid has been shaved of all the badging, giving it a slick aero look. The rear bumper has also been deleted and a 3-inch chrome tipped dual exhaust can be seen peeking out below. 15 inch polished 5-spoke wheels are all around.

Interior
White small vertical tuck and roll ribbed vinyl which now have toggles for the large windows and a shiny handle for the actuator are covering the interior of the door panels. On top of the panel is a wide swath of smooth vinyl for the sills. Slipping inside we find ourselves on 2 tuck and roll stitched white vinyl bomber style low back buckets in front and a similar panel but with no seat for the rear. The front buckets are power actuated and have fold down armrests. The original dash has been removed and now we see a more modern styled black padded vinyl topped straight dash with a wood appliqué dash front. This houses a series of round black face gauges with shiny bezels and a central chromed plaque engraved with a script styled Chevrolet badge. Hanging directly below this badge is an aftermarket digital AM/FM/CD player complete with Bluetooth capabilities. A pull-out convenient cup holder is below this radio, and all this hovers above a pristine black carpet. All vertical surfaces and headliner are covered in smooth white vinyl, which is very clean.

Drivetrain
A 350ci V8 very clean and spit shined with smatterings of chromed covers and heat shields is shoehorned into a clean black and mirrored engine bay. Atop is an Edelbrock intake 4-barrel carburetor. A 700R4 transmission which is a 4-speed automatic is attached. A 10-bolt rear is on back.

Undercarriage
A nicely done frame and undercarriage which has been sandblasted then given a coat of black paint. No rust, just slight patina black metal solid surfaces, and like new running boards with rust free body hangers. Independent coil springs for the front suspension and leaf springs for the back are seen along with power disc brakes now on front and power drums for the rear. Stainless steel mufflers are also installed.

Drive-Ability
Upon the fire up we were met with a nice throaty sound. Popping it into gear is effortless and we were off to the test track. This car has good acceleration, a nice ride, good brakes, and superior handling. All functions were working well during our test drive.

Overall a very nice rodded bowtie Special Deluxe, now even more special and more deluxe than ever. Plenty of work to modernize the looks and the mechanical innards, and you can have a turn-key showstopper whether it be up main street or at an actual show.
