1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

Tired of going to all those car shows and looking row after row of the same rodded Fords? You can almost become lulled to sleep with the redundancy of it all. Well fold up your chair, and put those walking shoes on, because you will have to walk a long way to find another one like this one.

For consignment a 1939 version of the Bowtie Master Deluxe in barn find condition. She's going to be a project, but with the design and technology from 1939 a worthwhile effort, and in the end, you will have a stunner in classic form.

Exterior
With its lovely design of the front V shaped grille flanked by bullet style cased headlights and rounded fenders which stand guard on either side of the pointed and rounded hood, we are firmly in art deco territory, which was all the rage since the mid 30's and continued well into the 40's. That grille has significant rust, the passenger's headlight is missing its lens, those rounded fenders have plenty of patina, and the hood is missing its horizontal trimmings on the driver's side, but it remains a thing of beauty. A rusted dented front bumper frames the bottom and has seen some hazard that jumped in front of this car and twisted the bumper. At the other end of the Buck Rogers rocket styled hood ornament is a split front windshield missing its wipers. On the doors a corroded mirror hangs off the side, and some of the wing window glass has become delaminated. The rear doors share the B pillar meaning the rear ones are of a suicide hinged nature. Up top the roof is sustaining some surface rusting taking over peeling off the paint. In back a humpback style trunk with no locking mechanism or badge curves gracefully downward to another rusted and twisted bumper…obviously something else jumped in its way! Small bullet style taillights are hanging off the sides of the rear quarters. A bit more paint peel off is seen on the seam between the roofline and the passenger rear quarter, and under the gas fill cap. Faded and corroded moon caps are highlighting old black wall bias ply tires.

Interior
Tattered mohair panels are covering the doors, some have major water damage, some just rotting away. A rounded art deco styled front bench covered in more mohair and looking faded gray sits on a rusted floor which has areas of complete rust through on the floor pans. This bench has some areas of tear outs, and stuffing coming from the holes in it. The rear bench is mostly intact, but there are numerous and sundry parts stuffed inside. Headliner is more mohair and is falling from the ceiling. The original dash has been ravaged by time and water damage but retains its original gauges. The long shift lever reaches for the driver and a plastic rimmed steering wheel is fronting this dash.

Drivetrain
Opening the hood, we note a 216ci Inline 6-cylinder with a 1-barrel carburetor on top. The air cleaner cover is in the back seat, and a 3-speed manual transmission is on back.

Undercarriage
Plenty of surface rust, but amazingly no invasive rust is seen on floor pans, running board rockers, or body hangers. Suspension is independent coil springs for the front, and leaf springs for the back. Drum brakes are on all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability
This car cranks but does not run. We had to jump this 6-volt system to get it to crank, but it would not turn over despite the valiant efforts of copious amounts of starting fluid.

A barn find that will definitely require the patience and skills of an experienced restorer. This 4-door cruiser needs some TLC to be brought back to life.
