Ask anyone who knows about old cars, and they'll tell you that '40s Mopars like this 1940 Plymouth are some of the best-driving cars of the period. The durable six-cylinder engines are a match for Ford's erstwhile flathead V8, and with better brakes and suspension, they're just a delight to drive. And few look better than the Business Coupe.
Presenting in Maroon and Silver this 1940 Plymouth Coupe has become a streetrod. Some shaving, some customization for the exterior, nice chrome trimmings and the two tone paint this car is like a box of chocolates…
In 1940, Plymouth's advantage was modern styling, and few body styles are more attractive than this Model 110 coupe. The pointed nose with smoothly integrated headlights was new that year, and the squared-off trunk makes it instantly recognizable from behind as a Chrysler product. The finish is Silver over Maroon two tone, with silver reserved for the uppers and maroon for the lowers. Details like the front grille, the vents on the hood, and all the stainless trim make this handsome Plymouth appear to be a far more upscale car than its original sticker price might suggest. HID headlights are now on, as well as LED tail lighting. Workmanship is very good, with doors that fit precisely, great gaps on the pointed hood, and plenty of attention to detail in getting the trim to fit right. The running boards were covered with black high gloss so they're durable and nobody but an expert will notice until they're up close. The bumpers have been shaved off for effect, and it works!
Back in the '40s, traveling salesmen cruised the back roads of the country in their 2-passenger business coupes like this one, which traded the back seat for massive storage in the trunk. It gives this Plymouth an intimate interior for two, in the new form of high back lumbar supported power buckets in gray leather and suede. These seats are fronted by a custom dash retaining its full metal jacket, painted maroon to match the exterior, and sporting a billet style machined insert for the blue LED glowing instruments. Just below is a large screen with a digital radio, navi screen and AM/FM/CD player head unit. This has a remote attached to the steering wheel. Also, added conveniences include power steering, power brakes, power windows that move gray tinted glass up and down, and a tilt steering wheel. Not to forget cruise control is also installed as well as Vintage Air. A reasonably tight headliner is above, and door panels use two tone gray and maroon panels to work out their design as you enter and exit. Gray carpeting is on the floors, and “Last Exit” is noted on the glove box lid. Shades of William Least Heat Moon and “Blue Highways.”
A 360ci Magnum V8 with its industrial look in shades of muted gray polish, smudged red valve covers and matte hoses showing slight age, the engine has an overall used and industrial/machine age quality, that I really think looks fab! This mill has EFI, an A513 4-speed automatic transmission on back with an 8.75 rear axle.
An all buttoned up and structurally sound X frame and solid floorpans and rockers make up the bottom of this rod. It's all looking solid with independent coil springs upfront and leaf springs for the rear and now power disc brakes on all 4 corners. A like new exhaust system is bolted on and snakes its way from front to rear.
A comfortable interior provides lots of conveniences that work perfectly when we fire up this Plymouth. Off to the test track (yup it's one of the hazards of the job but I must confide fun with my decoder and muscle car expert and partner in crime yapping as we go along) where this car performed swimmingly, all working conveniences, and a smooth ride and good cruiser.
The look has been achieved with the two-tone exterior, totally custom interior and the Magnum under the hood. All presenting well, and a not oft seen hot rodded Plymouth certainly holds its own.
