1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Gasser

A gasser is a type of hot rod originating on the dragstrips of the United States in the late 1950s and continued until the early 1970s. In the days before Pro Stock, the A/Gas cars were the fastest stock-appearing racers around. Gassers are based on closed body production models from the 1930s to mid-1960s, which have been stripped of extraneous weight and jacked up using a beam axle or tubular axle to provide better weight distribution on acceleration (beam axles are also lighter than an independent front suspension), though a raised stock front suspension is common as well.

Time to get hopped up and enter the world of the gasser in 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Form. Aptly named Jack Runner No. 7, fueled by 180 proof this wild looker and cooker is beautifully done, and runs like, well a gasser! A true throwback to the drags of yore, I can see my crew girl in her tight pants, tied bottom button-down shirt, big hairdo and chewing a wad of gum stating "Oi loike da drahhgs", especially in Jehrsee, gimme another cigharhette…

The 55 look of the Bel Air has been carefully maintained with the only difference being the jacked suspension. This car is bathed in black satin semi-gloss, keeps its chrome trimmings and bumpers and glass all-around. Some racing monikers, moon eyes and plenty of sponsor stickers adorn the exterior glass. Up front and on back around the Chevrolet cloisonné badges are beautiful red and white flourishes, and on the trunk, dual (ing..sic) male and female devils. Upfront a stainless tank typical of the gasser genre is fronting the chromed egg crate grille. Within the front wheel wells are snarling stainless steel header pipes which form into a single cut off pipe that when the engine is fired up will absolutely “rack off”. 15-inch polished Keystone Classic wheels are on all 4 corners.

A smooth shiny red Zodiac interior is screwed to the door panels that house the shiny handles and knobs and a black armrest pull. Slipping inside super shiny Zodiac Red vinyl with black piping draping front buckets and a large rear bench. A plastic center console with cupholders and the Hurst shifter are seen between the buckets. The dash retains its iconic dual fan design, driver's side housing the gauge cluster, and passenger side the Hot Rod badged speaker fan. Mini bowties stamped onto the central trim strip now houses a digital speedometer, AM/FM/CD player, a USB plug in port into the lighter, a trio of white faced gauges and a red dash top mounted tachometer staring at the pilot. Below the dash is a control panel with numerous toggles and buttons for various functions. A black tight headliner is above, and below is a sea of black nice carpeting. Gottga luv that Zodiac shine for the interior coverings.

Get ready to get some tech thrown at you! The mill is a 427ci small block stroker featuring a Dart block and rotating assembly, a Comp Cam (.598i/.583e lift, .251i and .255e duration), with comp 1.6 roller rockers. Heads are AFR (Air Flow Research) 220cc runners and 75cc chambers. On top is a Holley XP Ultra carb in 850cfm format, and on back a Borg Warner T10 with a hydraulic clutch. The rear axle is a Ford 9-inch with a 3.89 posi.

Fully restored, nice and black with no rust seen for miles. A new tubular frame has replaced the original and suspension is currently front leaf springs, and on back leaf springs with Caltracs bars. Disc brakes are on all 4 corners. Nice undercarriage custom structural creation.

Our resident racer took this beast out and came back with a smile on his face. The only disappointment was the tarmac was too cold to lift the front end. Otherwise, he reported it was “great!”

What a gas(er) to have experienced and in our showroom. A classic leftover from the early drags of yore, prior to the Pro Stock class. A way to get Wallys, all jacked up, loads of power, gobs of noise, and a plethora of badging, sponsorships, naming, and flourishes on a satin black with a mostly original bodied and trimmed car. I have a hankering for going in a straight line right now!
