1972 DeTomaso Pantera

1972 DeTomaso Pantera

De Tomaso Automobili (previously known as De Tomaso Modena SpA) is an Italian car-manufacturing company. It was founded by the Argentine-born Alejandro de Tomaso (1928–2003) in Modena in 1959. It originally produced various prototypes and racing cars, including a Formula One car for the Frank Williams team in 1970.

The current consignment, a DeTomaso Pantera is by any measure an exotic, a sleek wedge of pure sex that surely confused the hell out of customers who saw it alongside the Comets and Cougars and Continentals in Lincoln-Mercury showrooms. Yet it doesn't get nearly the same love as the Ferraris and Lamborghinis and other Italian supercars of the early 1970s. That's a shame, because the Pantera is far more affordable than anything else that rolled out of Maranello or Sant'Agata Bolognese. It's just as much fun, too, and if you get behind the wheel you could lose your 100 plus MPH virginity.

Exterior
A rare combination of red paint with a hint of orange tint shows nicely on the exterior of this low wedge-shaped car. All panels are straight and gaps are nearly perfecto-mundo…muah! Hidden headlights, and dual rounded over corner chrome bumpers are leading the way. As we move rearward, nice shiny trim surrounds all the windows, black sport side view mirrors are on either side, and on the driver's side a gas filler cap is camouflaged into a ribbed panel in black. Badging is nice and shiny, as well as a cloisonné T badge to pay homage to the designer and the Argentinian's heritage of a cattle rancher, as well as the Argentinian flag turned on its side. A sleek rear trunk lid actually opens up to a larger than you think trunk due to the mid-engine setup. The trunk is perfect with a wool felt liner covering a removable tub so you can access the transmission and engine. Shades of the Countach for the rear taillight and roll pan design with dual chrome tipped exhaust peeking out from each side underneath. More badging from the DeTomaso family on the hubs of each magnesium sport 15-inch wheels wheels are all around, and are wrapped by Goodyear front 205/60R15 tires and 255/60R15 rear wide rubber.

Interior
Sporty comfortable utilitarian with a hint of extra would best describe the all black interior. Dual black leather buckets flank a center console with a shifter in a chromed grid style bezel. As the center continues upward and at a rakish angle, a leather wrapped black panel houses various toggles and gauges as well as a vertically mounted AM/FM/cassette radio and temp and airflow controls aimed toward the driver. A simple instrument cluster with a circular tachometer, and speedometer, are within a square hooded padded dash top, and are fronted by the original steering wheel. Nice black clean carpet floods the floors and above is an off-white smooth headliner. Talk about slipping into something sexy…Abbondanza sesso.

Drivetrain
A numbers matching professionally built 351ci Cleveland V8 which has been beautifully resorted to its blue coated perfection sits in the center of this sports car. Topped with a 4-barrel carb and backing this up is a ZF 5-speed manual transmission, which presents uber clean. All this sits within black gloss engine bay. Up front under the second storage area we note a dual electric fan radiator, battery, master cylinder reservoir, and power steering fluid tank. Oh, Dio piccola!

Undercarriage
The underneath is just gorgeous with all polished aluminum surfaces and a black frame and floor tubs. All suspension has been well preserved, and some new parts installed. Front and rear coil over shocks along with power disc brakes from the factory are seen finishing off with a speaker for the exhaust in the form of a custom installed stainless-steel dual exhaust with 4 tailpipes.

Drive-Ability
It's always fun and always a squeeze for this writer to get his 61 year old body into one of these, but once in, it's worth the effort. This particular car fires right up with a sporty growl. On the test track it smoked it, ate it for lunch, pommeled it, and gave it a drubbing. Fantastic handling, smooth snappy acceleration, and even a semi quiet cruise with all functions and gauges feeding me information and output as desired on demand. Mi sono quasi bagnato i pantaloni...OOPS!

I'll give it 5 stars for the fit and finish, power and sporty look, as well as interior comfort. Powered by Ford, a harken back to the pre gas crisis early 70's when no holds were barred on the sporty car manufacturing front. Andiamo a fare un giro!
