1962 Ford Falcon Futura
1962 Ford Falcon Futura
The Ford Falcon was an automobile which was produced by Ford from 1960 to 1970 across three generations. It was a sales success for Ford initially, outselling rival compacts from Chrysler and General Motors introduced at the same time. The television marketing for this model featured the first animated appearances of the characters from Charles Schulz's acclaimed comic strip, Peanuts, with announcer contribution from Paul Frees.
This car, an early renowned “muscle car” appealed to all walks of life, from the youth who wanted to feel its power, to the families who would use it as everyday transportation. Accordingly, the car's design adopted a modern styling theme that features excellent proportions and minimal trim. We have a well-preserved car, with a respray that matches the factory paint, clean interior, and 82K plus mile car. Step back into the Futura.
At the front of this coupe, a simple chrome bumper centers two clear parking lamps below bright headlights and a straight aluminum grille. Above that grille, a sculpted hood hangs minimalist “FORD” lettering between classy gunsight fender toppers, a chromed hood scoop, and like-new glass that's framed in straight stainless trim, mirrored stainless wipers. Correct chrome mirrors and traditional chrome door handles perfectly complement great looking Castillian Gold paint which is looking fab overall. A wavy textured cream-colored vinyl top is on, and the “C” pillar sports a flying bird FUTURA badge. On back are the Ford jet engine style round taillights, and dual button styled round backup lights on the rear panel just below the trunk lid. Nice shiny bumpers adorn the fore and aft, and “faux” front quarter vents are looking good as well. Standard FUTURA 13 inch badged chromed with just a hint of blue and white paint wheel covers are wrapped by wide white bias ply tires.
All original red vinyl bucket front seats, and bench rear seats showing red piping all around, are in superior condition. Noted is a snazzy chrome ribbed center console which goes well with the seats. Red carpeting covers the floor, and the Falcon dual bumped up dash in red and highlighted aluminum set into a black field displays the necessary analog gauges. You can spin a white steering wheel to your heart content, as well as push on the half circled chromed interior horn rim, because these are excellently preserved and clean. An original AM radio is seen. Headliner is tight and unmarred, as are door panels, and all window mechanicals and actuators. A shout out to the trunk which is covered with original factory checkered plaid vinyl in excellent condition.
A 170ci inline 6-cylinder engine is seen under the hood. This is in beautifully rebuilt (around 70K miles) condition with jet black engine bay, block and supple wires and hoses. It is topped with a red valve cover which is excellent, and a red air cleaner cover, which has a 1-barrel carburetor underneath feeding the inline 6 cylinder. 2 speeds for the Ford-O-Matic transmission makes it go, and it pushes power rearward to a 3.50 axle.
With plenty of rustproofing texture paint covering the floorpans, rockers, toe kicks and trunk panels, there is no rust seen. Presenting not only very nicely, but also very simply we can see independent, coil springs for the front, and leaf springs for the back, and drum brakes for all 4 corners. All mechanicals underneath the vehicle are in very good condition and make it worth your while to gaze at the underside photos to get a real appreciation of this car.
Off to the grocery store for this Futura, it started right up, and ran like a dream come true. Good acceleration, smooth automatic shifting, and the interior was very comfortable and roomy. The radio was inoperable, but all else passed the functions testing category.
Obviously appreciated over the years by regular maintenance, and care, the pride shows in this awesome example of early Ford candy for the masses, way before they knew it was going to be a possible muscle. An original car, that is priced right, and is getting ooohs and ahhhs before it even hit the showroom floor. Is this classic in your Futura? It should be because it's a great survivor.
