1941 Chris Craft Speedster

1941 Chris Craft Speedster

Chris Smith built his first wooden boat in 1874 at the age of 13. Years later, he built a duck hunting boat. His friends liked the way he built them, and they asked him to build them one. This was technically the start of the boat company. He soon began to build more boats and joined his brother Hank in 1881 to begin producing boats full-time.

Ahoy mates! Avast ye, as were offering up a consignment not like the other land lubbers we have lining our hallowed dry halls here at Classic Auto Mall (save for the Amphicar), a 1941 Chris Craft 17' Speedster. This mahogany beauty all put together with shiny metal seams, and a wood bottom which was last in the water in 2019, is ready to set sail off the Neck at Marblehead, and run with the Kennedys if you will. All hands on deck whether ye are three sheets to the wind or have yer full sea legs, come aboard and let's make some wake with some wood.

Exterior
You will not find a more beautiful shaped boat fashioned out of mahogany that has been expertly steamed and bent to form the pointed bow and curved abaft with its single exhaust poking out the center of the dungbie. Red paint covers the waterline and below. In addition to all the shiny rigging on the rear deck there are a laminate of more mahogany and teak inserts creating a nice shellacked striped effect. This doubles as the cover to the engine and bilge compartments and hides the fuel tank. A beautiful curved windshield is atop on front and is supported with chromed vertical struts on either side.

Interior
Shiver me timbers I can see gorgeous red vinyl in curvaceous form makes up the seats in front and mid-section passenger benches. These are pristine and are fronted by a wood dash, with another beautiful french curved padded red vinyl dash top. Round shiny bezel gauges and a few knobs as well as a compass are seen in the dash, which is fronted by a large steering wheel. Just perfect weatherproof floor covering is noted under the benches, and a shiny shift lever just out from the center of this right-hand driver. Blimey! There is no Bikini Bottom nonsense going on here sailors.

Drivetrain
132.7ci flathead inline 4-cylinder babbit bearing Chris Craft engine sits in back in a fairly buttoned up engine bay. A single screw propels the boat through the water.

All is ship shape for this '41 Speedster, beautiful exterior wood, lots of shiny chrome, tight seams, and a Chris Craft engine. Excellent presentation on the benches and interior keeping it simple but very elegant. She comes with a Karavan trailer and winch. A wood boat may be in your future?? I guess whatever floats your boat!
