1965 Ford Mustang Convertible

1965 Ford Mustang Convertible

Advertisements became popular reminders of the Mustang's youthful spirit, such as one featuring two mature adults sitting in a new Mustang with the words, “Youth is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on children.” It was the car to have it you were seeking the fountain of youth. The 1965 Ford Mustang was the car to have if you were looking to win over your neighbor or hit the road for fun and adventure. It was also a must-have for enthusiastic drivers and car enthusiasts who simply liked to drive.

For consignment, a 1965 example of the very popular Ford Mustang first year officially out edition. A 289ci V8 with a 3-speed manual transmission, a driver's driver. Vintage color match paint, and a working smoothly convertible, wire wheels and a beautiful interior, one of the excellent examples here donning the halls of Classic Auto Mall.

Exterior
Consigner states, “driver quality” Vintage Burgundy paint, drapes the straight steel rust free panels of this car. A few inclusions, minor scratches and very slight dimpling is seen in a few areas, but as described driver quality, NOT show quality. A fog light optioned car with the extra yellow lights in the grille next to the galloping Mustang badge. Like new chrome, correct and very nice badging, the hockey stick coved with chromed trim on the rear quarter, a rocker trimming running the length below, and on back a luggage rack, peek through exhaust with chromed bezels, and knockoff style wire wheels, this highly optioned Mustang has you arriving in style and class. A black canvas top is in excellent condition, clear rear windshield, and flawless up and down manual motion.

Interior
With several thousand dollars spent on maintenance and repairs over the years, some of this money went into the interior. Those replacements include the front buckets, interior door panels, and new carpet. All of these are excellent condition nice and tight, and no signs of wear. A rear bench which is original to this car is also in very good condition showing just a few loose wrinkles in the tuck and roll inserts. Upfront the dash is all original with the central speedometer, and a single flanking circular gauge cluster on either side. A nice factory steering wheel is in front of this dash, and as we pan right, an aftermarket Mustang badged AM/FM/Cassette digital radio is now installed into the center. Black carpet is on the floors and is clean as a whistle, and dash top has no cracks or fading. A note to the trunk space with the plaid liner and like new spare tire.

Drivetrain
Under the hood we see a very nicely restored 289ci Windsor V8. It is in a really clean engine bay and has a chromed air filter holder and valve covers to match. On top is a 4-barrel carburetor. Nice supple rubber hoses and no corrosion can be seen under this hood. On back is a 3-speed manual transmission, and consigner notes less than 200 miles are on a new clutch assembly and resurfaced flywheel.

Undercarriage
Save for a few scrapes on the gas tank, all is very nice underneath, clean black texture paint, no rust, solid floorpans and toe kicks and rockers. Drum brakes are on all 4 corners, and torque boxes are all solid. Bottom inside of doors are clean, and thresholds are looking good.

Drive-Ability
A very easy starter, and smooth idle during warmup. Off to the test track, and here at said track, this car performed flawlessly. Nice smooth acceleration, tight steering, and bias free panic stopping. Shifting was a breeze with the new clutch, and cruising at highway speed proved no problem for this Windsor under the hood.

With some nice extra options on this car it has a touch of pony class, and just a little extra than the run of the mill 1965 Mustang. The 3-speed is seldom seen, particularly on a higher optioned car, but good for the driver and performance. Money well spent on the interior, paint, and engine which all work together to make this car an A grade consignment and an eye catcher/head turner.
