1987 Dodge Ram R/T Pickup

1987 Dodge Ram R/T Pickup

1981-1993 was the first generation of Dodge Ram pickup trucks. Dodge had technically been producing trucks since 1917, but their 1981 pickups were the first ones to sport the Ram name. In order to signify this, Dodge slapped a ram's head hood ornament on the trucks after Lee Iacocca, Chrysler's President and CEO at the time, decided it was a good mascot. Fun fact: the ram's head logo was first used in 1933 to represent the trucks and rugged vehicles made by Dodge but was no longer used after 1950. So, Iacocca's decision in 1981 to resurrect the Ram could actually be considered a vintage throw back.

For consignment a RAM R/T (R/T designation for road/track with no “and”) translating to more power. This consignment is good as it gets for 1987 as steel is straight, trim is near perfect, and paint and interior are beautiful. It's a definite shower, and with a goose of the boot a real goer!

Exterior
Bathed in Candy Apple Red, paint bathes steel panels which are very straight and have well minded gaps and seams. No rust within miles of this truck, and all trimmings are very shiny and straight with nary even the beginnings of any dimpling or fading. The front grille with a single headlight on either side uses square and rectangle design, the standard of the 80's and early 90's. Simplified, yet sophisticated, the grille is well preserved. A fiberglass R/T badged hood with dual small scoop openings is flanked by a solid straight front fender on either side. In the mid section of the fenders is a trim piece which is a wide black plastic textured bar, with thin chrome bands on either side. These trims line up near perfectly when you eye the sides from front to rear. The doors are straight and close with a quality thud, and sport large chrome mirrors on either side. The short 6 foot bed is wonderfully straight on the sides, has more of that black and chrome molding, a wheel well surround of bling, and a white racing stripe which wraps around the bed area near the rear of the truck. On top of the bed is an arched snapped vinyl cover. Underneath is an unscathed bed, with tough plastic lined sides in ribbed black, and a rubber liner for the actual bed bottom. The rear gate is looking like new, and all chromed rally style Magnum 500 wheels are wrapped with like new Cooper Cobra radials on all 4 corners.

Interior
Black vinyl in split bucket format is the seating in the spacious cab, and there is a fold down jump seat to add an additional passenger. These seats are like new, as the fronting dash, which is all original design, has wood appliqué panels and a trio of gauges in the round in front of the original wheel. Power windows, and power lock toggles are added to the nice door panels also in black. A/C has been installed, and nice black carpet floods the floors, and has Dodge R/T badged carpet floor mats. An AM/FM/Cassette with blue digital readout small EQ, and a toggle to control the balance is neatly within the dash as well.

Drivetrain
Within the Candy Apple Red engine bay is more candy in 440ci V8 with a 6 pack on top. Strapped to the back of this spunky mill is a 727 automatic transmission, and an 8-3/4 3.55 posi rear. Spin the tires and let's go to the undercarriage!

Undercarriage
All buttoned up underneath with a solid unibody and frame to hold new rotors and drums, brake lines and hoses, and fuel cell between the frame for extra protection. Independent front suspension with coil-overs is upfront, and on back are tough leaf springs with certainly no rust. Rockers are all solid, and engine and transmission pans do not have a lick of any fluid leaks.

Drive-Ability
This truck is absolutely like new and fired right up. It was off to the test track where it handled very nicely, and came to a straight stop, quickly. That 6 pack takes just a little instant to kick in but when it does the power just goes on and on. A real ass kicker, solid acceleration and smooth cruise at highway speed with little effort. A smooth ride for a truck as well.

You will have to look really close to find a fault in this truck, and also look far and wide to find another one in as good of condition. Real straight body panels, a clean bed, snappy trimmings and a wide stripe, along with the bed cover, and Magnum 500 wheels, oh and don't forget the 6 pack on top of the 440.
