We all know the story of the coming of age of the rear engine dragster. In 1970, Don Garlits experienced a devastating starting line clutch explosion that severed half of his foot and left behind an image that will forever live in drag racing infamy. Less than a year later, Garlits unveiled what is thought to be the very first rear engine dragster that really worked. The one that changed drag racing forever.
The Super Comp drag racing class runs on an 8.90 index, with essentially no rules regarding engine displacement, carburetion or type of vehicle. Engines can burn either gasoline or alcohol but no nitromethane or nitrous. Engines can be naturally aspirated or boosted with a blower. Most racers are running a single four-barrel Dominator-style carburetor, although a few are using injectors on their engines. To be competitive in the Super Comp class, you don't need the fastest car in the field. In fact, that's why most of the people who race in this class like Super Comp. The cars that race in this class typically hit 165 to 175 mph in the traps, but speeds can range anywhere from 150 to 190 mph. It's not the speed that matters most – it's the elapsed time. In Super Comp, you just have to beat the other guy to the finish line without breaking out of the 8.90 limit. If you run a lower ET, and both racers break out, then whoever is closest to the 8.90 time is the winner. Super Comp is a more affordable alternative to some of the other drag racing classes where it can take lots of power and lots of bucks to be a winner. Here at the Classic Auto Mall we're proud to present to you, a 1989 Meng rear engine Super Comp dragster. The consignor states that this car was owned and raced by Rick Moroso.
This particular car is a consigner stated 500ci V8. Some of its engine specs are Ford Motorsport A460 Cylinder heads, Comp cam and lifters, a Ford Motorsport A460 Intake, 1050 CFM Dominator Quick Fuel 4-barrel carb, Holley Fuel Pump and a Barry Grant Regulator. There is a TCI 2-speed Powerglide transmission with a converter and shield. The rear axle is a Mopar 8-3/4 inch and it has 4.56 gears and it is a spool type. Noted there is a significant crack that has been repaired on the right cylinder head near the valve cover mounting area.
The car has a thin metal covering around a tubular frame chassis. 17-inch Weld AlumaStar front wheels wrapped in 22x2.5-17 rubber, and the rears are 15-inch Weld ProStar wheels with 33.5x15.0-15 drag slicks. The cockpit was NHRA certified with its roll cage, controls and fire extinguishing equipment and will require a recertification before you can blast down the quarter mile. There are disc brakes on the rear.
This race car can provide a less expensive alternative for the person who has an itch to do some side by side straight lining, where the winning strategy is ET not speed. The engine is set up to run racing fuel, and it is ready to race. Light the tree and I'll see you at the end in 8.90 seconds.
