1971 Chevrolet Vega

1971 Chevrolet Vega

Pro Street is a style of street-legal custom car popular in the 1980's, usually built to imitate a Pro Stock class race car. Pro Street cars should appear to be more at home on the drag strip than the street, while remaining street legal and not gutted like a Race Car or Bracket Race car. Typically called a Backhalf car (tubbed).

This street legal highly modified Vega has undergone extensive renovations, mostly to make it quicker to drive it in a straight line. It is also content to drive any street legally, as it possesses a Pennsylvania Antique plate.

Exterior
Except for the large hole in the hood which has a big metal scoop sucking up air in large quantities, and the massive tubbed rear fenders to accommodate the Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro 29 x 18.5x15 rear rubber, this car retains the original Vega look of 1971. It's all there: grille, bumper, headlights, window trimmings, badging, a rear spoiler, and rear bumper, all steel bathed in black. 15-inch Weld Prostar wheels are all around, and the Skin Flint fronts are a paltry 165R15 in size.

Interior
With a complete welded in roll bar which surrounds the two Jaz aluminum racing buckets, complete with racing harnesses, you will be safe and sound as you zip up the street. Rear seat is removed and replaced by the rear big wide tire tubs, and a JAZ fuel cell run by Holley electrics. Carpeting has been eliminated, and above is still the original dash. A few add ons like a tachometer, oil, and water gauges which hang below in the center. Also noted is a B&M shifter and some orange pool noodle protective foam wrapping the roll cage. Also attached to the top of the cage is a lineup of toggles to manually run various electronics.

Drivetrain
A 1975 TXB 350ci V8 fed by a high rise Weiand dual quad tunnel ram, and 2 Holley 500cfm carbs, you can be sure to run through some high-octane fuel quickly. A 2-speed automatic Powerglide transmission with a manual valve body, a transmission brake, and line lock for jump starts off the line. A Ford 9-inch 4.56 rear axle done by Dutchman is in the back.

Drive-Ability
It fires right up with a deafening roar and is a bit squirrely when not going in a straight line. Even then the suspension is a bit soft and the car feels like it could lean over real far if pushed. So, we put it away and can sum up—it runs!

Street legal, but a handful if you want to go anywhere but in a straight line, and even then, it's going to take some getting accustomed to. Plenty of power, mostly original looks, and this street racer will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, as well as possibly the front wheels.
