1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

Like the Tri-Five Chevys that came before it, the Chevelle is one of those cars GM aced right out of the gate and continued to perfect. Eventually, the marque became one of the strongest brands in automotive history; and at one point, with a full list of body styles, options, trim grades, color combinations, and engines which ranged from mild to outrageous, literally embodied the 'custom built' nature that defines the muscle car era.

Offered for consignment is a numbers matching, fully documented, real SS 454ci LS5 big block car. Condition could best be described as car show ready, but do not be fooled, it is definitely a shower, but also a goer.

Exterior
Bathed in Pewter Silver and adorned with black decal dual striping on the hood and trunk, paint is 10 plus years old and still look fab! All chrome is pristine with no dimpling or fading and this year got it right with the bumper inset round taillights. Grille is a nice black egg crate design and sports an SS badge in the center. Directly is a cowl induction hood which runs back to clean softray tinted glass with nice chromed surrounding trim. Front and rear bumper guards have been optioned on, as has a sport mirror. 15 x 7 sport wheels in black are wrapped by Goodyear Polyglas GT bias ply tires.

Interior
Black vinyl in true spit shine condition covers the Strato style buckets up front, and a large bench in the rear. Racing forward between the buckets is a snazzy clean console, with the dual vertical bar and single horizontal bar shift lever which is right out of a fighter jet (well, actually it's the style not the actual shift lever!) that is just too cool for school 70's styling. A Stereo 8-track tape player with AM radio is present, however, the radio does not get any reception. Also, a special instrumentation package has been added to the extremely clean and beautiful dash and gauge cluster. The original steering wheel fronts the dash and is also excellent. Carpets are clean and non-faded black, and rubber floor mats emblazoned with Chevelle protect them. Headliner is near perfect and that wraps up this showroom interior.

Drivetrain
Flipping the dual cowl hood, we are bowled over with the original numbers matching 454ci LS5 V8 in mint condition. Consigner says it has never been rebuilt, however it was restored with shining orange block and valve cover paint, perfect hoses, and a shining example of this '72 years air cleaner, keeping dirt out of the 4-barrel carburetor. A rebuilt with new converter TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is attached to the back, and puts power back to a massive 12-bolt post traction rear. Smoke 'em if ya got 'em.

Undercarriage
All clean and green underneath with virtually nonexistent surface rust, structurally sound steel frame, and a dual stainless exhaust with no mufflers! Power disc brakes are on front and power drums on the rear and are fed with DOT 3 fluid. Suspensions front and rear were rebuilt recently and include independent coil springs upfront and 4-link with coil springs in the rear. This is a smooth operator.

Drive-Ability
Our muscle car aficionado was the test driver and seemed like he loved every minute of it. This car ran flawlessly, he got it going pretty good without being unsafe or reckless, and thought the interior was “cherry”. The A/C blows real cold, and the amp gauge is nonfunctioning. A great driver that left a smile on his face.

This is a hot commodity here at Classic Auto Mall and I say that because they rarely last very long gracing our former mall halls. Beautiful example of the largest engine available at the time, runs like a deer, handles well, and OMG that shifter!! I have muscle car envy.
