1968 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster

1968 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster

From boulevard cruising to backroad bruising, it's hard to find a better all-around performer than a Corvette. And once Chevrolet firmly established the brand as a global tour de force, it began a constant quest to achieve increasing levels of performance and desirability. No generation of Corvette emphasizes the transition from muscle car to all-out sports car better than the C3.

This Corvette with a black convertible top, and a body matching hardtop, now resides in our halls here at Classic Auto Mall. It stands out as something different for the Corvette aficionado due to the fact it is still a chrome bumper car. Just hearing this one may take pause, but seeing is believing, and this writer is hooked on the styling of this car.

Exterior
972 Polar White respray in correct Corvette color match covers the original British Green. This paint shows some checking and wear on the door jambs and doors which may have not gotten the proper treatment before respray. Dual exhausts exiting in chrome tipped dressings exist from the rear of this example and offer up a recognizable 68 Vette sound. Sans hardtop and top down, this “shark” transforms into a convertible. Noted is the rear plastic window on the convertible is clouded and has a tear. Also chrome door handles are rusted.

Interior
TRIM-STD, Black vinyl bucket seats, door panels, and dash. Fading and showing a bit of wear seen on both chairs, however overall it presents in fair condition. Center console is wrapped in black and uses aluminum highlighting as well as some black and shows with some wear, chipping and finish rub off. A large chrome shift knob sits in the center and sets everything off. Also, a wood steering wheel adds a nice touch to the overall interior. Carpeting throughout appears as slightly faded and has a few tears around the seats. Noted weatherstripping is cracked and drying out.

Drivetrain
A 427ci V8 which has a double stamping on it brings into question if this car is numbers matching. Take a look at the photo and judge for yourself, but our expert cannot say for certain either way. The engine, however, carries the IL stamping code (427ci, 390 hp). The 4-speed numbers matching Muncie manual transmission, resides in an overall clean but dusty engine bay. Manual steering and brakes give the driver a feeling of being one with the car.

Undercarriage
A gander underside reveals some areas with significant surface rust, but it has not progressed to invasive. Interestingly the driver's side frame has been sprayed with a black rattle can, but the job was not completed. 4-wheel disc brakes, and C3 suspension are also seen from underneath.

Drive-Ability
This car started with some pumping of the accelerator and ran smoothly. Noted is the clutch is a very short throw, but it shifted smoothly, and car handled well.

Just a nice looking, well sorted, resprayed 1st year C-3 Stingray that runs and sounds like it did in '68. Consigner states it was a barn find that sat for 17 years before he obtained it. This explains the dust which covers some surfaces of this car and only 57,323 actual miles. If you are in the market for an early Corvette that's ready to cruise, do not hesitate on this one…When the shark bites….!
