1939 Oldsmobile Model 70

1939 Oldsmobile Model 70

The Dynamic 'Series 70' was the middle series offering from Oldsmobile. It was positioned between the Series 60 and the upscale Series 90. Five body styles were available on the Series 70 120-inch wheelbase platform. Base price of the Olds 70 Series was $963 without optional equipment and accessories.

This 2 door “business man's” coupe was given a body-off restoration which included an engine rebuild, and new interior. Aptly named due to its lack of a back seat, giving way to storage, where the salesperson could stack their goods, and move from location to location.

Exterior
You have to love these large and in charge Detroit iron stylized pieces form the late 1930's early 1940's. They drip with art Deco features and have a look that is timeless. The front grille with its sharply curved center section following the nose and hood line, and the two curvy side grilles beneath the bullet style headlights, flanked by large fat fenders, a mini running board, and smaller rear fenders. A curved trunk lid, simple chromed bumpers, wide whites with moon hubcaps and we are ready to go out for a night on the town, all in its maroon painted straight paneled glory.

Interior
A nice mixture of mohair, felt, and glossy wood veneers make up the single bench seated cockpit. The original Art Deco styled dash in a matching maroon insert within the gloss veneer is fronted by a restored original steering wheel, also maroon. A center chromed front section is peppered with cream bakelite knobs and an Olds monikered panel. The bench with felt Deco styled tuck and roll stitching, and mohair bolsters appears nearly new. Nice tan carpet is noted throughout, including the large seatless rear of the passenger compartment, allowing for plenty of product to take on the road. Headliner is like new and is tight as a drum.

Drivetrain
A 230ci Inline 6-cylinder engine restored to its correct Olds mint green color, sits in a very nicely done engine bay. A 3-speed manual transmission is attached to the rear of this I6, and shifts smoothly and effortlessly.

Undercarriage
A gorgeous presentation with perfectly painted maroon floorpans, a straight and shiny black X frame, and all suspension parts show not even a hint of surface rust. Now that's an undercarriage.

Originating in New Mexico, she was brought back east and completely restored 8 years ago. A definite body off restoration, and a consigner stated mere 800 miles on her since the restoration. Noted the gas gauge does not work, and all new cylinders, master cylinder and new fuel pump have been recently put on.
