1971 Chevrolet Chevelle

1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Clone

A Chevy Malibu is the base car for 1971, which came with a bench seat, a non cowl induction hood, standard wheels, a rectangular speedometer in the dash (unless you got the rally option then you could get round, but the configuration was different from the SS round instrument cluster dash setup), and Malibu badging. A very popular model Chevelle, the Malibu trim car was no slouch, but it was no SS either!

For consignment an SS Clone, meaning a restorer went to great lengths to have this car appear that it is actually a Chevelle SS trim, and did a very nice job to boot. A keen eye, and knowledge of the options, and we still know it's a clone, although no one is trying to cheat, as it clearly states it's a clone, but a good one!

Exterior
Antique Green Metallic and a very nice job of applying it leaving only slight artifacts and dirt behind prior to spraying. In order for the paint to be absolutely stunning, a thorough wet sanding could be performed, and it would look like glass. The initial job is very nice though and presents so. Dual wide white stripes work their way from stem to stern, and a steel cowl induction hood has been put on. SS badging is attached, as are new bumpers and black painted grille. New exterior door handles are available with this car but currently not installed. Magnum 500 Style wheels wrapped with Mastercraft Avenger GT tires all around.

Interior
1969 Bucket seats in Caramel color replace the original bench seat. Door panels are all new as well, and a rear bench seat looks showroom. A correct SS center console in black with a Hurst shifter sitting proudly in the front of it splits the buckets. The original Malibu dash with the rectangular speedo (a hint of Malibu) fronts an SS steering wheel. A few aftermarket gauges hang from the dash, and a tachometer is attached to the steering column. An aftermarket Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo is installed into the dash where the previous radio was. Gold pile carpet in pristine condition floods all areas of the floors.

Drivetrain
A period correct 350ci V8 with roller rockers, dual quad Edelbrocks, and MSD ignition are seen in the very clean engine bay. This healthy mill is backed by a Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission.

Undercarriage
Sparkling clean, and nicely restored frame and floorpans, and a 12-bolt posi rear is installed. Drum brakes all around, and power steering is noted.

Overall save for wet sanding, (and that is being critical) this car is very well done. The clone concept has definitely come across, and meticulous attention was paid in doing do, to make it correct. Overall a gorgeous presentation to have it look correct. A successful clone. I'll have another, and another, and another!
