1990 Nissan Skyline GTR R32 Coupe

1990 Nissan Skyline GTR R32 Coupe

The Nissan Skyline was originally produced by the Prince Motor Company in 1957, and then by Nissan, (becoming the 'Nissan Skyline'), after the two companies merged in 1966.  The Skyline was available as either a 4 door sedan or a 5 door station wagon, and it featured a 1.5L GA30 engine.  It wasn't until 1964 that the first racing GT Skyline was introduced, still under the Prince Motors flag.  The introduction of the GT Skyline marked the Skyline's shift from sedan to race car.  Skyline finally became a Nissan in 1969, when the first performance bred Skyline GTR was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show.  It was still a sedan, but it now boasted an inline six engine and 160 horsepower.  The first generation Nissan Skyline was available from 1969-1972.  The Skyline had been through many phases, but it was in 1989 that the real precursor to the GT-R of today was introduced.  The R32 Skyline GT-R had all-wheel drive and the famed Nissan RB26DETT inline six engine that pumped out 280 horsepower.  It still wasn't sold in America, but the JDM model was and still is a legend in the American tuner community.  Thx To NissanUSA.com

For consignment, a 1990 Nissan Skyline GT-R.  It is the stuff of legends that the pedestrian car packing monster horsepower and AWD performance was known to Americans who salivated over the possibility of importing one.  In 2014, dreams became reality when the 25 year rule allowed the R32's to be brought stateside and to fill a niche not suitably filled by any other car or car manufacturer.   Here's a fantastic example and your chance to own a once and forever legend and it comes to our Hallowed Halls sporting a mere non verifiable 108,420 kilometers, (67,369 miles), on the 6 digit odometer.  Buckle up...its gonna be one hell of a ride!

Exterior
44.9% of '90 GT-R's were Gunmetal Grey Metallic, and this is one of them.  The paint is excellent and the color covers all body parts including bumpers, wing, door handle, and side mirrors.  The front chin spoiler is glossy black as is the mesh style lower air intake.  The car wears argent gray 18-inch Volk Racing Rayseng Engineering 6 spoke wheels with the red logo on one of the spokes and matching red valve stems.  To a non-car person, the front of the car would not attract much attention in its understated design, the intakes are large but there are no hood bulges, hood vents, or auxiliary lights to make it stand out.  The back, however, is a different story.  The rear taillights in their body keyed bezels and twin circles, are what every JDM fan dreams of.  The wing and big exhaust are epic and the GT-R badge seals the deal.  The only imperfection we found was some curb scrape on that front chin.

Interior
The basic design starts with the door panels that contain only a cloth insert for contrast.  The bucket seats pick up on that material to form a blue-gray two tone pattern in supportive seats that are decidedly 80's/90's in their simplicity.  The 2+2 seating arrangement in the back mirrors the pattern in a much tighter space for adults.  A smoothly sculpted 3-spoke steering wheel is again, brimming with simplicity, (on the right hand side of the car, by the way).  The analog dash is pedestrian at best with essential gauges that don't veer from base Skylines of the era.  The center stack, however, has three gauges indicating voltage, oil pressure, and boost.  Below that is an AM/FM/CD radio and an ashtray.  The center console houses the magic wand, a 5-speed manual shifter.  The knob shows some wear as does the boot around the parking brake.  The black weave carpet and grey headliner have both held up well.  The trunk has no cover or padding and is driver quality.

Drivetrain
This is where legends are made.  Under the modest hood we have the 2.6 liter RB26DETT inline 6 cylinder engine.  The DETT stands for dual overhead cam, electronic fuel ignition, twin turbo.  All that goodness produces 280 horsepower but everyone knows that was intentionally underrated in Japan and actually exceeds 300hp.  Power is sent via the 5-speed manual transmission to all the wheels and controlled by the infamous ATESSA E-TS system which shifts torque output percentages based on electronic sensors.  4.11 gears are found at both differentials.  Naturally, power disc brakes will be found on each wheel.

Undercarriage
Relatively clean and dry underneath with only a few areas of minor surface rust.  The big single exhaust comes off the engine and enters a glasspack style muffler and then exits with a big, chrome tip.  We note that heat shields on the exhaust near the front likely scraped bottom at some point, but the damage is superficial.  Independent suspension is found at both ends with MacPherson struts.  We note some residual oil on the front crossmember and oil pan.

Drive-Ability
Having not driven many RHD vehicles, it takes a minute or so to get the brain oriented, but in no time, we're traveling the test loop in fine fashion.  The combination of handling and power is instantly gratifying.  Acceleration is very good, and the clutch is smooth.  Braking is more than adequate and all the feature work and this proves to be a well running example of a JDM classic!

This is the grandfather and analog version of the modern GT-R which are much more complex machines.  But this comes from the era that brought us the Acura NSX and they share a simple, analog interior that is supportive, but essentially no frills.  It's all about the driving experience and this one delivers!  We suspect it won't be here long so make the call today!
