1948 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe

1948 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe

A lead sled is a standard production automobile with a body heavily modified in particular ways especially, though not exclusively, a 1949, 1950, or 1951 model year Ford 'Shoebox' or Mercury Eight car.  In the name, "lead", (as in the heavy metal) ,refers to the use of lead as a body filler in early days, and "sled" refers to the lowering of the vehicle, giving these vehicles the appearance that they were "slip sliding" down the highway.

For consignment, a lead sled in 1948 Cadillac series 62 form and looking similar to ZZ top star Billy Gibbons CadZIlla.  A completely outrageous car with a chopped roofline, frenched headlights, tinted glass, painted bumpers and a custom tail light setup.  Low n slow but it will go very fast if you want.  All bathed in Blurple, (excuse me!), and shining like a crazy diamond.

Exterior
Our consignor has spent copious amounts of money to make this creation and it shows all over it.  A custom fashioned chromed waterfall grille, Blurple, (excuse me!), a painted bumper with inserted signal lights, frenched headlights and a bulbous hood and this is just the start.  That hood has a gaggle of blue and pink pinstripe flourish and the ornament topper is long gone.  The roofline has been chopped and now sports tinted glass.  The long front quarters are devoid of any chrome, and the doors use poppers to open them as the handles have been shaved.  Custom body matching mirrors hang off of the doors.  The back of the car is a beautiful extruded bubble for the trunk and rear glass just above.  All shaved and clean.  The iconic rear quarters have a bump up on their trailing edges and in lieu of the taillight being there some custom vertical tail lights have been inserted into the backs of the quarters.  Another Blurple, (excuse me!), painted bumper seamlessly runs between the rear renters and tail light panels.   Fender skirts nearly obscure the rear wheels but these are 15-inch Colorado Custom wheels all polished and wrapped with 225/55R17 low profile rubber.

Interior
A pop of the doors and I'm greeted with a nifty combo of tweed and leather.  Leather for the sills and tweed for the lowers which house a simple billet actuator and a molded in armrest.  All this menagerie is in a cream and mauve color way.  Seats take from the door panels and are using cream leather on the wide tuck and roll seats and back inserts and mauve tweed for the bolsters.  A custom console runs through the center and is mauve tweed and a leather top.  In back is a fancy overstuffed cream leather tuck and roll bench which is just fab!  Upfront is a Blurple dash with late model sweep instruments in the drivers side panel.  A couple of eyeball AC vents and knobs for AC are also in this panel which stretched across the front.  Cream is the coloring for the padded dash top.  On the rise to the dash from the console is a Boss AM/FM/Bluetooth touch screen radio.  In the center console are also toggles for the windows and seat adjustment joysticks.  Fronting the dash for the driver is a billet styled leather covered steering wheel on a tilt column.  The paint on the dash front is showing a few cracks.  A custom tweed headliner is above all this action.

Drivetrain
In the restored engine bay now sits a big block 454ci V8.  Our consignor states it puts out 330hp but no documentation is seen to back this up.  It has a single 4-barrel carburetor on top and a TH350 3 speed automatic transmission on back.  The rear axle is a 10 bolt 2.43 geared version.  Stock dual exhaust is on for the exhale.

Undercarriage
All clean and rust proofed to perfection and no rust.  Also nearly non existent road dirt.  Independent coil springs are in front, and on back a 4 link with coil springs is on.  Power disc brakes are in front and power drums for the back

Drive-Ability
The car fires right up and runs like a Cadillac with a 454ci V8.  Very smooth, great acceleration and all the power options were in working order.

A slightly aged look to this build but still totally custom and exterior lines that just sing.  If you are looking for something completely different and a not oft seen Caddy lead sled, we've got your ticket!
