1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D Sedan

1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D  Sedan

In 1878, Rudolf Diesel was attending the Polytechnic High School of Germany, (the equivalent of an engineering college), when he learned about the low efficiency of gasoline and steam engines.  This disturbing information inspired him to create an engine with a higher efficiency, and he devoted much of his time to developing a "Combustion Power Engine".   By 1892 Diesel had obtained a patent for what we now call the diesel engine.

For consignment…an all stock, all original W123 300D turbo diesel from 1984.  Always garage kept, the current consignor has owned this car since 1992.  It has been faithfully maintained, and has undergone some recent maintenance such as new engine mounts, axle seals, tranny seal, and oil change.  The car has a manual shutoff as sometimes it keeps running, (a known issue with these cars).

Exterior
Astral Silver Metallic, in original condition, is found on the exterior of this meticulously cared for car.  From its right looking front grille and chromed surround topped with the tri pointed star, to the trim spears on the side window surrounds, and rear trim it's all in nicely preserved condition.  An electric sliding sunroof on top, and clean rocker panels on bottom are noted.  Plenty of room in the trunk and just below the lid are ribbed self cleaning tail lighting.  The car has the factory mag wheels and 205/70R14 rubber all around.  No rust to speak of on the body or rockers on this panzer tank.

Interior
MB Tex and leather in dark blue and in very nice, gently used condition covers the bucket seats in front and bench seat in back.  Immaculate dark blue carpeting covers all the lower surfaces.  A very nice dash and center console house all correct working gauges, and climate controls, and some burl veneer is seen mixing in with the blue vinyl coverings of the console.  Very slight cracks are noted on this burl lacquer.  The fully working AM/FM/Cassette radio is nestled between the dash, and console.  The glovebox door is slightly out of alignment, but this is really the only major fault that can be noticed when picking through with a fine-tooth comb.

Drivetrain
A 5-cylinder turbo diesel 3.0 liter engine coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission takes you smoothly up to speed.  This is fed fuel by a Bosch fuel injection system.  There is a 3.07 rear axle.  All is just slightly patina under this hood and in the engine bay.  Let's call it a clean aged look!

Undercarriage
The underside if this car has some road dirt and patina, but is rust free.  The floor pans and suspension look like comparable cars of very low mileage.  The car has 4 wheel independent coil sprung suspension and power discs for all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability
As a test drive revealed, this car takes just a small lapse of time for that turbo to kick in, but when it does, the car accelerates to any car of today's standards.  The interior is nicely appointed and it is a cruiser with a smooth ride.  The passenger rear power window does not go up and down, although the motor runs, the radio does not work and the power antenna is frozen.  The consignor states that the shut off solenoid acts up every now and again, and if it does not shut off use the kill lever on the solenoid under the hood.

A consignor that has cared for this car cosmetically as well as mechanically has yielded this original classic 300D that appears slightly used and ready to rack up more miles.  Although it has a consignor stated 112,122 miles on it, this engine along with the durability of the Mercedes Benz build, will be active for a long time.  Unlike earlier non-turbo models, this car can keep up with today's fast-moving vehicles with turbo acceleration and diesel durability, and don't forget Mercedes-Benz reliability and build quality, all expertly pampered in its lifetime.  What an excellent combination!  Schnell!
