1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28

1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28

Where did the Z28 moniker come from?  It was the next code after Z27 on the RPO list.  In 1967 GM wanted to produce just enough Camaros for racing in the Trans Am series, they developed a car for it but couldn't come up with a name for it.  The RPO assigned to this package was Z28, so they called it that since it was a catchy phrase.  In 1968 it became a separate model for Camaros.

For consignment, a beautiful example of the IROC Z28 from 1986 with an odometer showing 37,423 title verified actual miles on this well maintained and garage kept car, there are no hidden surprises.  This beauty is a turn key, ready to roll out of the halls of the Classic Auto Mall, and into your driveway, or down Main Street!  With some recent maintenance on the transmission and in excellent condition, it's hard to walk past this 3 owner example of the fabled Z28 and IROC without taking a second or third look.

Exterior
Very appealing to the eye Flame Red covers the straight steel body panels, fairings and front built in spoiler of the car.  A curved glass rear greenhouse deck offering up plenty of storage is seen on the back.  IROC Z badging in a gray fade is seen on each door, as well as Z28 tuned port injection in another color fade of gray for the badge on the front lower fenders.  Menacing hood louvers, a full steel roof and small tail spoiler are seen on this car as well.  Polished and painted 16-inch 5 spoke Camaro silver mags are attached to all 4 corners and noted as “front” and “rear” wheels because of different offsets and are wrapped in 245/50R16 Cooper rubber from the 38th week of 2021.  Even the lower rocker portion of this car is very clean and presents as a nicely cared for 37,423 mile car.

Interior
As we swing the large dual doors, we shake hands with pristine door panels in angle striped broadcloth on top and gray carpet below.  In keeping with the 1980's square and rectangle design a black plastic panel houses the door handle, side view mirror adjuster toggle, and the top of the interior door pull.  Slipping into the passenger compartment, we sit upon angled striped dark and light gray broadcloth bolsters, and simple clean gray broadcloth inserts.  Some matching gray piping adds accent.  A rear duo of more buckets broken up by the hump is in the back and could be called 2 plus 2 style.  Racing up the center, is a square and rectangle design console in black which houses a glovebox and the automatic shifter.  Moving upward to meet the dash, is the digital AM/FM/Cassette radio with a built in equalizer and temperature and airflow controls.  For the dash, a black textured plastic panel houses several round black bezel gauges, with the speedometer reading a mere 37,423 original miles.  Gray carpet covers the floors and is clean and is protected by gray floor mats that are very slightly soiled.  A gray felt headliner in near perfect condition floats above the passenger compartment and rounds out the interior.

Drivetrain
A clean 305ci LB9 V8, the car's original engine, is shoehorned into the clean engine bay.  Supple hoses and clean corrosion free parts are attached to every corner of this power plant.  This mill is fed by Tuned Port electronic fuel injection and a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission is bolted to the back.  The transmission has recently treated to a new pan gasket, front pump seal, tail shaft seal and new O-rings throughout.  While this service was being performed, a new rear main seal was installed in the engine.  This well maintained combination is throwing power rearward to a 10-bolt 3.23 Positraction rear axle.

Undercarriage
All rust free, original structural steel, floor pans and unibody construction is seen underneath and represents the low mileage.  All sound under here showing the independent coil spring front suspension and coil springs and a torque arm for the rear.  Bringing this Mustang eater to a stop are the RPO J65 4 wheel power disc brakes and the OEM single exhaust with dual tail pipes is in charge of the exhale.

Drive-Ability
As I sat inside, I was harkened back to my mid 80's memories of screaming down the highway going to the shore and I fell in love with the 1980's all over again.  This car fired right up and the test track proved all those memories true, a great cruiser, smooth accelerator, and good handling.  The AC was not blowing cold as our consignor had taken the belt off the compressor due to the compressor grinding and the brakes, while fully functional, felt a bit soft in the pedal.

A low mileage example, well kept by its 3 collector owners, and driven solely for enjoyment as it should be.  Pristine condition, and beautifully clean interior, just hop in and turn the key and you are off like we were.
