1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SL Roadster

1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SL Roadster

Vintage Mercedes are the perfect combination of old world luxury and universal appeal. Fast, luxurious, stylish and built like a Panzer tank, they're first the choice of many classic car collectors who like to both show and drive their metal. With no collision or major body damage this rock-solid Benz is a keeper.

For consignment, from the era when Mercedes Benz was over engineering and overbuilding extreme quality cars which would last for many years, this car fits the bill exactly. A car with only 55,725 non-verifiable miles as the title reads mileage exempt. It has the hardtop as well as its factory soft top. Not only that, it comes with service records dating back to its initial inspection in 1985 at MB Nederland B.V. Distributiecentrum, I proudly offer up to you this 1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SL.

Exterior
Factory correct Anthracite Gray Metallic paint covers this car and is in very nicely preserved condition. There is a black canvas convertible top, which performs perfectly, and is in very good condition allowing you to have an open-air roadster, or a covered-up convertible. Also, there is a body matching hardtop that comes with this car and when the hardtop is on it is definitely showing off the “Pagoda Style.” This allows for cold weather driving and provides plenty of protection from all elements. All chrome trim and brite-work is good with no signs of dimpling or fading. Headlights are single rectangular European style and are very clear and hover above Euro spec bumpers. Meanwhile, the taillights are ribbed for a self-cleaning when it is driven in the wet. Like new 14-inch Mercedes-Benz wheels are on all 4 corners wrapped in 205/70R14 Hankook radials from the 40th week of 2021 and add to the nice and shiny presentation.

Interior
Lightly used and still very presentable is the mantra for this interior with chip free wood lacquered burl, and all original equipment for this interior including the Becker Grand Prix AM/FM/Cassette stereo. The dash shows without a single crack and the gauge cluster is really clean with its factory black face gauges with white and yellow lettering and yellow pointers. The original steering wheel is out in front of the dash and is showing some its like new textured black rim. Palomino colored leather covers the heated buckets and upon closer inspection show a few age wrinkles and some color loss on the driver's outer bolster cracks, but certainly no tears or rips are noted. The lovely headrests speak German to this writer with their design which remains iconic to these years of the SL's. A very small, think child sized, rear bench is behind the seats and shows with a different shade of Palomino leather. Very clean gold carpet floods the floors as well as the trunk and the door panels show slight wrinkles but remain very presentable.

Drivetrain
A recently serviced 5.0 liter SOHC V8, showing some patina but otherwise well kept, sits in the very clean unrestored engine bay. Bosch K-Jetronic EFI provides the fuel, and a 4-speed automatic transmission is on back. Both the engine and the transmission are original to this car and a 2.24 geared rear axle propels you down the road efficiently.

Undercarriage
This writer finds it absolutely amazing that the underside of a 38 plus year old car can look this good but it truly does! Almost no rust is seen, and what is noted is very minor surface rust. Power disc brakes with ABS and new hoses within the last year are noted all around as is independent coil spring suspension and power steering. Sending spent fossils to the atmosphere is a dual exhaust system with a stock style muffler, and much like the rest of the undercarriage, remains rust free.

Drive-Ability
Of course, this piece of German engineering fired right up, and handled our test track with ease. Great acceleration, great handling, and solid braking. All mechanicals were operable. A good driver and cruiser.

1985 never looked so good with this classic. A daily driver that can cruise all day and not break a sweat. Despite some very minor interior cosmetic issues the car is solid, and can be driven right off the lot and into your driveway or fahren Sie die Autobahn hinunter.
