1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass Coupe

1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass Coupe

The Oldsmobile Cutlass was a series of automobiles produced by General Motors' Oldsmobile division between 1961 and 1999.  At its introduction, the Cutlass was Oldsmobile's entry-level model; it began as a unibody compact car, but saw its greatest success as a body-on-frame intermediate.  The Cutlass was named after the type of sword, which was common during the Age of Sail.  Introduced as the top trim level in Oldsmobile's compact F-85 Series, the Cutlass evolved into a distinct series of its own, spawning numerous variants, including the 4-4-2 muscle car in 1964, premium Cutlass Supreme in 1966, and outright performance Hurst/Olds in 1968, as well as the Vista Cruiser station wagon.

For consignment, a very original car wearing a factory correct respray 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass Coupe.  Yes its a classy grocery getter, pre muscle car in looks and performance and a consigner stated 41K original miles although we cannot verify this due to the miles being exempt on the title.  It is bathed in Provincial White and sits on Magnum 500 wheels, which is one of the few things not from the factory on this car.

Exterior
Provincial White bathes the outside of this all steel no rust car.  The trimmings, such as the bumpers and grille. are looking good, however the door edge trimmings are a bit scratched and marred.  Dual shiny bezel headlights lead the way and reside beside the front egg crate with horizontal bar in the center grille.  An inset bumper nestles nicely into the front quarters which are clean and straight.  It does appear as though some of these panels have just a slight offset to them but it is not immediately obvious.  A central hood trimming and below the belt line and above the rocker trimming is on and runs the length of the car and presents in good condition.  The roofline is rust free and some smaller flying buttress B pillars gently lower the roofline onto the trunk which is long and spacious.  On back, a rectangular angled tail lighting spans each corner and a shiny bumper is below.  All badging is factory and correct.  Magnum 500 wheels are on all 4 corners, and these are  wrapped with 225/70R14 Futura GLS super sport raised white letter tires.

Interior
In contrast and as a highlighter to the white exterior, we see straight clean door panels upon entry.  These have blue vinyl with x pattern stitching and buttons in their centers.  Above is a wood appliqué panel and below some black carpeting.  Actuators and cranks are looking good as well.  Inside more blue vinyl with some more usage of the X stitching pattern and button centers for the inserts on the front split bench and rear full bench.  Slightly darker piping surrounds the inserts and bolsters.  In front an angled dash has black faced duo circular instruments in a half aluminum and half black textured surfaced dash bottom.  Some knobs and pulls are within the aluminum and some are black including the temple sliders and AM radio in the center.  The factory steering wheel fronts this dash and is in excellent condition, albeit a bit sticky to the touch.   Blue carpeting floods the floors and is nice and clean.  Above, a white headliner shows some aging on the edges but remains nice and tight.

Drivetrain
Under the hood in a well detailed engine bay sits a gold block and valve covered 330ci V8.  It appears to have been restored cosmetically.  On top of this engine is a 4-barrel carburetor with a 2-speed automatic Jetway drive transmission.  On the back is a 10 bolt 3.07 open rear axle.  A stock dual exhaust is on and all details right down to the stickers adorning the air cleaner covering are like new.

Undercarriage
For its age it presents very clean and mostly rust free.  There are just a few slight areas seeing some surface rust, but mostly unremarkable.  Independent coil springs are in front, and a 4 link with coil springs is on back.  Drum braking is on all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability
This 66 fires right up and off to the test track I went.  I tried the panic stopping first and it pulled to the right just slightly.  The car accelerates smoothly as it does shift wise.  Handling was good and for a power steering car it drove effortlessly.  The radio did not operate.

Overall a wavy nice example of a '66 NON-442 version in mostly original condition and looking great.  It ran well and is a nice version of this year's car named after a swashbuckling sword of yore.
