1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle
1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle
Bela Barenyi, an 18 year old Hungarian student, submitted a chassis design for a “Volkswagen” in 1925 and is recognized as designing the basic VW Beetle. Ferdinand Porsche, an Austrian automotive engineer, created the Volkswagen Beetle after receiving a contract from Hitler in 1934 for prototypes. The Beetle's air-cooled flat 4 engine was designed by Franz Reimspeiss not Ferdinand Porsche. Even with 20 plus million being built to date, he received less than twenty dollars for his work.
I'm happy to announce we have bugs here at Classic Auto Mall. Oh, certainly not the kind that you would swat at, but these were made in Wolfsburg Germany, by the millions and infested the USA over the years. This classic 1973 Super Beetle version is in nice condition, and just like the ads dip in our test lake, although careful as we have no way of getting you back, so you'll have to take the ads of the day's word for it. Consisting of all good solid steel, a 1600cc engine, a 4-speed transmission, and the look that has grabbed over 21 million buyers. Maybe you'll be the next person to get the Bug?
Exterior
Deep end of the pool Marina Blue respray in good condition covers straight steel panels for this bug. Gaps are well minded and just like the advertisement did you could submerge this car in water and remain safe inside! Running boards connect the fenders, which show 1973 turn signals attached to the front fenders and thin elephant print brake/backup/turn signal cluster lights attached to the back. The headlights are sporting chrome trim bezels, making the car seemingly looking at you. All badging, window surrounds and lighting bezels are in good condition. Gracing the front center of the roof is an aftermarket pop-up sunroof made of tinted safety glass. Standard steel wheels and VW dog dish chromed caps are all around and are wrapped in blackwall 185R15 radials.
Interior
Shiny white vinyl high back bucket seats in front and a long bench in the rear make up the seating. White vinyl door panels with black cranks, actuators and armrests are dressed with a pouch for storage are clean and straight. Black carpeting covers the floor around the seats and gearshift area and remains very clean. The black very simple dash holds an aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette radio, single circular instrument cluster, and glovebox are fronted by the original steering wheel, and are in good condition with no cracks or fading. The Wolfsburg castle logo is in the center of the steering wheel. Peeking upward reveals a nice new white vinyl headliner.
Drivetrain
The engine is a 1,600cc flat 4-cylinder, air cooled, and carbureted with a 1-barrel carburetor. This is attached to a 4-speed manual transmission. The rear mounted power plant sports dual exhaust with tarnished chrome exhaust tips. Note the engine bay has been nicely finished and detailed.
Undercarriage
The front and rear suspension are independent with drum brakes all around. Scanning the underside, the viewer can see a light rusting on some of the rear suspension parts, but otherwise clean and unremarkable. We do note a few areas of "swiss cheese" invasive rust on the flooring that will need remediation in the future.
Drive-Ability
This car started right up, and drove smoothly. It shifted well and was dead silent from the suspension when pushed into a turn. All working functions, and that wonderful tinny exhaust sound you can only get from these classic bugs.
Overall, well above average condition, with a clean interior and smooth running air cooled 4 popper. The round mound design was virtually the same throughout its production run, with only the exterior lighting and windows changing. I think I've got the itch!
