1994 Jaguar XJS Convertible

1994 Jaguar XJS Convertible

Jaguar is responsible for some of the most memorable cars ever produced.  It's no coincidence that the brand's designs tend to age gracefully.  And it's no coincidence that well-preserved Jaguars always find a dedicated group of fans that are ready and willing to pay top dollar for their favorite vintage.  There has been a recent uptick in European cars and if this trend has piqued your interest, this Jaguar is worth a look.

This thin line design cat has a wide stance, quick reflexes, good looks, and is well muscled.  Purchased as a gift for our consignor's aunt and used to run to Atlantic City for some time with the one armed bandit, the car was always valet parked and never was kept far from the front as it was in a holding spot.  The top was always kept up due to the wind messing up the fair lady's hair, you can rest assured this car was well looked after and doted over, much as one would care for their favorite child or pet.  A no rust example with a fine working convertible top, striking black paint, and woven magnesium snowflake styled wheels.  It will just growl at you.

Exterior
Bathed in menacing black, this car's exterior paint is well aged, showing slight dulling areas and small scratches.  There is no rust present though and gaps are all good, but we do note a crack in the lower front air dam, most likely from an encounter with a curb stop.  This car is utilizing chromed bumpers which are wrapped by black rubber, and above the front and back are European style head and tail lights.  A black canvas convertible top, which operates flawlessly, tops off this sleek machine.  Sitting on all 4 corners we note snowflake style mag wheels wrapped in 225/60R15 rubber from the 12th week of 2020.

Interior
A swing of the doors reveals a bit of a rarity with black colored leather on the door panels.  There is a veneer strip near the sill of each door that has aged gracefully, but is still presenting nicely.  Other areas of the dash that have veneer are intact and nicely preserved and mix well with the black colored leather.  The 2 bucket seats are in glorious shape with no tears or fading, just the expected wear that fine leather brings with age.  Dark gray carpet covers the floors and is showing almost no staining thanks in part to years of careful use and a pair of color keyed floor mats.  The dash looks clean, and toggles were working for all functions.  The trunk is nicely preserved with a gray terrycloth covering everything, even the tools are wrapped in it.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is the original unrestored inline 6-cylinder 4.0 liter DOHC engine.  Electronic fuel injection feeds this mill, and a ZF4HP22 4-speed automatic transmission is on back to drive the 3.54 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted but mostly unremarkable.  The floor pans and unibody are solid and have what could be a coating of factory rustproofing.  Independent suspension is all around as are power disc brakes.  The exhaust system is showing some early signs of rusting beginning.

Drive-Ability
This car started right up and ran smoothly.  It handled all of our nuances on the test track and had a nice cruise.  Steering is sharp, and acceleration is fine.  All was working well but the AC was blowing warm, the speedometer stayed buried past the 150mph mark, and the radio is locked and in need of its code.

Nothing says power, prestige and prominence quite like a Jaguar, especially a convertible, and this one hits all 3 marks.  Well cared for, a classy looker some 29 years later, and has very nice lines…catlike reflexes with the handling and all I can say now is meeYOW!
