1955 International S162 Flatbed Truck

1955 International  S162 Flatbed Truck

The S-series model designation was first used by International Harvester during the 1950's.  During 1955 production, the R series model family underwent an update, with International renaming its light-duty and medium-duty trucks the S-series.  The model designation was used through 1957, when International introduced the A-series model family as an all-new design.

For consignment, a barn find 1955 S162 flatbed truck courtesy International.  This truck is solid but will need some TLC on the parts, engine and cosmetic fronts.

Exterior
A large white painted grille insert which looks very much like a smaller front end of a truck, (keep looking at it and it will come through!), contains the round parking lights.  Green steel surrounds this area and eventually branches off to become the front fenders.  Within this, a single round headlight emerges and we note the driver's side is missing.  Below is a silver steel slightly curved bumper with pull hooks welded on.  A high hood has a small horizontal opening in the front and the badge on top center.  This makes its way to the rounded over cab with large rear view mirrors hanging off of either side and a split windshield is noted.  A wide running board helps the driver climb in and just behind this is a shelf for extra storage.  The flat bed area is topped with diamond plate steel and has some shorter wood sides to hold cargo on top and not allow it to fall off.  Structural sides of the flatbed steel are invasively rusted.  The back of the bed comes to a pointy end and one would think it has a hydraulic lift gate or the bed would slide rearward and down to load a vehicle, but alas it is not to be on this particular truck.  20-inch daisy style truck wheels are on and wrapped in 8.25-20 tires with dual wheels on back.  Overall the exterior is in International Green and shows areas of surface and invasive rust, especially near trimmings and badges, but it's plentiful.

Interior
A swing of the utilitarian door reveals solid steel door panels.  These show with blotchy areas of surface rusting and the bottoms of the doors and the thresholds have invasive rust.  A long green covered vinyl bench is inside, and has a few tears on the seat showing the foam stuffing.  The dash is a simple all metal flat style and contains all the necessary round gauges and a central clustering of pulls.  A CB radio is installed so you can keep an ear out for Smokies and a long floor shifter reaches for the driver.  Rubber floors and a few extra parts are hanging out on the passenger's side floor.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a gas powered 240ci inline 6 cylinder engine that has a 1-barrel carburetor on top.  A 5-speed manual transmission is on the back.  An oil bath air cleaner covering and some surface rust is seen on the engine itself.  This truck runs on a 6 volt system.

Undercarriage
More surface rust is noted underneath and it abounds in all surfaces.  Leaf spring suspension is on all 4 corners as are drum brakes.

A mid 50's example of medium duty trucking, gas powered, and in need of some TLC.  Ripe for the picking in our Hallowed Halls.
