1920 Ford TT Grain Truck

1920 Ford Model TT Grain Truck

To stimulate sales Ford introduced its first factory made cab.  Known as the C cab, it was only made for two years.  Ford also introduced its first factory-built bed for the rear of the truck.  This was quite small and many people, including the folks who owned this vehicle, declined to buy them or removed them immediately for something bigger.  The bed on this truck looks as if it could have come straight off an old horse drawn wagon, which was quite common.  Today, whatever else you can say about it, it certainly has the patina of age.

This vehicle for consignment is the heavy-duty truck version of the Model T called the Model TT.  Introduced in 1917, the Model TT was the only major variant of the Model T.  TT's have a longer and stronger chassis and lower gear ratios to enable the standard Model T 20hp engine to move one ton of freight.  This vehicle is straight out of 1920 sports either a later model, or coach built cab, as Ford sold the Model TT as a chassis only up until 1924.  Regardless of the cab style, this barn find condition TT grain truck is mostly complete, has its drivetrain intact, and is sporting a wooden wagon style bed.

Exterior
Complete with an all steel cab, (somewhat as the vinyl roof covering has gone missing), and a single door with actual glass on either side that abuts the front cowled hood panels is our first glimpse of this TT.  This all runs forward to meet a blacked out radiator surround with a standard radiator cap atop.  On this radiator surround there is no grill protector per se, and the honeycomb radiator is exposed to the front.  A single headlight flanks each side and are electrically operated to turn them on.  Just before the windshield, the mounting points for the former cowl lighting are present and accounted for.  On the back is the wagon style wood bed.  A wood floor and matching wood stake body sides have been added.  21-inch wood spoked wheels are surrounded in front by simple curved metal fenders, which swoop downward and melt into a small running board which aids the driver to get into the cab.  Out back, the tires are gracefully tucked under the bed.

Interior
About as simple and utilitarian as it gets with metal door panels with only the door latches inserted.  The remnants of a bench seat are here, including the tub and spring steel frame.  The metal dash has the headlight lever and a simple ampere gauge, and that is all.  It is fronted by the original large steering wheel.  The floor was at one time wood, but has long since rotted.  Keeping in mind this is 1920, your engine will be controlled somewhat by the pedals as well.   A small rectangular rear window allows the driver to keep an eye on whatever is in back while traveling down the dirt roads.  Up top are a few lone survivors of the former lathe strip frame.

Drivetrain
Under the dual cowled hood sits a 177ci 4-cylinder engine topped by a 1-barrel carburetor and we note the optional cab heater over the exhaust manifold.  This engine once produced 20hp and with the wheel design, could take you through the most challenging of dirt roads with a 1-ton cargo loaded.  A 2-speed planetary gearbox is attached and a 7.25 geared axle moves you down the road.

Undercarriage
Simple transverse leaf spring suspension all around, and mechanical drum brakes which are only seen on the rear wheels.  This makes sense as that is where the weight is.

Drive-Ability
While the drivetrain is complete, it does not turn over by hand.  Some mechanical tinkering is in order here.

Overall a fairly complete example of the worker bee line right out of 1924.  A steel cab, a wood bed with added wood stake body sides, and classic Model T looks up front.  Ready, willing, and with your skillful hands, able to haul goods once again, or even haul home a few show trophies.
