1966 Chevrolet Nova SS

1966 Chevrolet Nova SS

Chevrolet designer Clare MacKichan recalled about creating the Chevy II: "There was no time for experimentation or doodling around with new ideas from either the engineers or from us in design; And it had to be a basic-type car."  "I think that was the quickest program we ever did at any time," he continued.  "We worked night and day on that car, and it didn't take very long to run it through our shop because we had a deadline".  And that's what made the Chevy II one of the fastest new-car development programs in GM history – just 18 months after the designers got the green light, the first production Chevy II rolled off the Willow Run, Michigan, assembly line in August 1961, in time for its September 29 introduction.  Unlike the Corvair, the 1962 Chevy II was deliberately never intended to be revolutionary in concept or execution; its mission was to give Chevrolet buyers a simple, back-to-the-basics compact car. When he announced the Chevy II to the press, Chevrolet General Manager Ed Cole described the car as offering "maximum functionalism with thrift."

Dignifying our showroom space here at Classic Auto Mall is this Nova SS stunner.  I say this because one look at the fit, finish, and paint on this car and you will not be able to restrain yourself from being impressed.  With almost everything either rebuilt or replaced, a certainly assured job well done, very few faults, definitely a show car.  However you do not need to be afraid of taking it out on the weekends and blowing out some of the carbon buildup as dad used to say!  An All Chevy Performance feature car in the January 2023 issue, formerly owned by retired Nascar driver Hut Stricklin Jr., being a true SS V8 car, and wearing a trim tag correct and rare WA paint code, (this combination was canceled by Chevrolet before the end of the model year), this little Chevy II is a stunner, gunner, and a runner

Exterior
Gosh where do I start…I could just say it's all great, and be scary as to my accuracy, but I digress…a shiny egg crate grille with single headlights flanking either side, all surrounded by beautiful trim work, and held up by a gleaming  bumper with no faults in the chrome.  A low rise reverse scooped cowl induction hood, with the scoop finished in Tuxedo Black, perfectly makes its way back to factory glass surrounded by plated and polished trim.  Straight steel panels make up the slabbed sides, but they align just perfectly, and are spattered with brightly plated polished handles, mirrors, and badging.  Bringing up the rear is a straight as an arrow trunk lid, and rear trimmed LED tail lights, with a bumper below, all polished to factory looks.  The paint is stunning on this car and partial year rare combination of Chateau Slate for the lower body and Tuxedo Black for the roof and previously mentioned scoop on the hood.  Lightly smoked glass gives passengers a nice view of the scenery as it whisks by and American Racing VN506 Rally wheels in 18-inch format are wrapped in Redline Diamond Back radials with 275/35R18's up front and 295/40R18's in the rear to complete the package.  Simply stunning!

Interior
Straight and true black synthetic leather framed top and bottom with steel blue stitching and black painted steel mix with some chrome accenting, cranks and handles and some tuck and rolling for the lower door panels, are a preview of what's to come.  Slipping inside is pure heaven of retro modern by JMB Upholstery with 2002 Camaro power buckets to grab your eye and your butt with tuck and roll bolsters, and smooth heavily accentuated inserts in black synthetic leather.  These sport steel blue stripes following the contour of the tuck and roll as they run through the center along with more blue stitching.  In back a matching styled bench looks like it's never been sat in.  A black plastic console runs between the front buckets and is topped with an aluminum insert that holds the white knob topped Hurst shifter.  Black Daytona weave carpeting is flooding the floors and in front above the carpeting is a simple black padded top dash.  The dash now sports the full gamut of white face gauges by Dakota Digital   On the Ididit tilt steering column is now mounted a CON2R black padded rim 2 spoke steering wheel and under the dash are the round chrome vents for the VIntage AC & heat system.  A  Custom Autosound AM/FM stereo is fitted neatly into the factory location and is wired to Blam Audio speakers.  Above is a nice tight black vinyl headliner with working dome light in the form of  blue LED lighting under a black leather and blue striped standoff.

Drivetrain
327 cubes in the form of a healthy V8 are happily mounted in a pristine engine compartment home.  This mill has bored .060 over creating 336ci and sports a Scat crankshaft, SRP flat top pistons, and is topped with Dart aluminum cylinder heads.  This combination makes a consignor stated 425hp.  A 4-speed manual Muncie M22 transmission with a McLeod RXT twin disc clutch is strapped to the rear of the mill, and a Holley 650cfm 4-barrel carburetor is atop and works in conjunction with a Dart intake for precise fuel and air injestion.  Power flows back to a 12-bolt 3.31 geared rear end with Moser 31 spline axles.  Total visual eye candy under the hood with help from Billet Specialties for the valve covers, air cleaner and polished front accessory drive system...just clean as a whistle.

Undercarriage
When one states every nut and bolt was taken off this car for the restoration, you would expect to see what is under this car...nothing but a clean, mechanically perfect, straight, and shiny compilation of parts working together as they should…amen!  Crisp clean floor pans and unibody rails are all in black and all rust free.  Independent coil spring front suspension with Church Boys upper and lower control arms, Viking double adjustable shocks and Wilwood 6 piston 12-inch disc brakes are on the front.  Also in the front we see a Church Boys power rack and pinion steering assembly.  Meanwhile in the rear, more Church Boys components with a triangulated 4 link and coil overs and 12-inch Wilwood 4 piston disc brakes.  A Church Boys Racing pair of headers and 3-inch custom exhaust system with dual chambered Turbo mufflers accepts spent gasses from the mill and dumps out at the corners of the rear bumper.

Drive-Ability
A quick fire up and warmup and off to the test track.  I felt like a superstar behind this wheel in this excellent interior.  On track I experienced smooth acceleration, bias free panic stopping, and nice tight cornering.  All fun actions were working at this time.

Well restored, well upgraded for the engine department, and nicely done interior, we have a runner, and a gunner.  If you are looking for a smaller muscle car classic this one is truly a wild deuce in its true SS form.  This will be the toughest block on your block.  Deport your import and snap this one up, it won't be here long.
