1994 Saab 900 T Commemorative Edition

1994 Saab 900T Commemorative Edition

Like any car owners, Saab drivers use the car as a status symbol.  In the same price echelon as offerings from car companies like BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volvo, the Saab falls under the luxury car umbrella.  Saab has an under the radar status. Tom Barnicoat, former CEO of Endecol and Saab enthusiast, called it the anti-brand brand. It doesn't have the same flash as a Benz or Beamer -- hip-hop stars aren't rapping about it. It's the type of car that proclaims status to those in the know, without excess.

For consignment, one of the 500 built Saab 900 Turbo Commemorative Edition Convertibles.  With its VIN sequence falling toward the end of the CE production run, the fine folks at Saab built all 500 in a row down the assembly line, and having all the other correct styling cues, this is a rarer piece of modern automotive history.  With its turbocharged 4 cylinder, full leather interior, some walnut burl trimmings, and a power top you too can be one of the understated proclaimers of success.  In a world of BMW, Audi and Mercedes it's time to dare to be different with this 89,183 actual mile version right from Sweden.

Exterior
Nova Black Metallic paint covers all the heavy steel panels known to the Saab brand and is a stand alone color reserved strictly for the Commemorative Edition cars.  Some areas of light paint application and runs are noted in the respray but no underlying rust is noted.  The Saab front headlight wiper system is seen leading the way atop the aerodynamic flush mount headlights which flank the chrome trimmed grille.  The well recognized wrap-around windshield provides support for the tan convertible top, fully insulated with rear defogger inside, and working flawlessly.  Black trimmings highlight the glass and passenger compartment and flow together to form a rear spoiler just aft of the rear of the top.  15" Commemorative Edition specific polished lip wheels are wrapped in like new 195/60R15 radials.

Interior
Correct front passenger bucket tan leather seats  feature various power adjustments and the correct charcoal piping are installed and looking very good with just a fine amount of acceptable age wear.  A narrow rear bench seat matches the buckets and appears to never have been sat in.  A small black console races toward the dash from in between the buckets and holds the power lock, power window, and power roof switches as well as the walnut burl topped leather wrapped shifter.  Fronting the buckets is a leather wrapped steering wheel, and instrumentation is embedded in a walnut burl dash plate in front of the tiltable steering wheel.  Cruise control, air conditioning, climate control, power steering, an aftermarket AM/FM/CD stereo and tinted glass are just a few of the options noted.  Clean tan carpet floats this luxurious and beautiful interior and of note are the 4 heavily padded headrests, one for each seating location.

Drivetrain
A 2.0 Liter, 16V High Output turbocharged 4-cylinder engine sits in the original and unrestored but clean engine bay.  This engine produces 185hp thanks in part to the "red" APC controller, another clue for the CE.  This small but mighty mill pushes power to a 5-speed manual transmission and through the 3.82 geared drive axle to the tires.

Undercarriage
Showing typical wear for its age we some surface rust on the usual suspects but all else remains solid with some road dirt and patina, clean but unremarkable.  Power rack and pinion steering and 4-wheel ABS brakes, and an overall well-maintained solid car with independent progressive rate front coil springs and a coil spring and solid axle rear for the suspension.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and good runner on the acceleration front, cruising speeds, and solid braking.  All functions were working nicely during our test drive.

Rarely do these Commemorative Edition models come up for sale and for good reason.  Stylish looks, turbocharged performance, leather seating and amenities galore all flow together to make for a luxury sports car like no other.  A few paint issues but overall a nice example of the safe reputation Saab.
