1961 Chevrolet Impala

1961 Chevrolet Impala

History
In celebration of their 50th year of production, Chevrolet introduced the Impala. Designs were changing, moving away from traditional tail fins being replaced by deep sculpted rear panels, dual headlamps, larger “greenhouse” passenger compartments, and upgrades in suspension and engine options. Interior finishes such as color keyed door panels, and brushed aluminum began at this time as well. Through generations 1 to 3, styling got sleeker, passenger compartments lower, and emphasis was on a look of a car in motion, when it was sitting still.

This Impala went through a frame off restoration approximately 22 years ago. At this time high quality fiberglass front fenders were installed. A custom black cherry color was then painted throughout. 12 years ago the front/rear windshields were replaced, as well as a new gas tank. In 2014 a rebuilt engine and transmission were installed and have approximately 10,000 miles on them. The car currently has a total of 57,664 miles.

Exterior
An immaculate custom mix black cherry color, new front and rear glass, spectacular chrome, and original iconic Impala 3 taillight configuration, combine to make this “bubble top coupe” a real head turner. No rust or bubbling is present, and all chrome is excellent condition. A pair of true to 1960's rear deck sunken antennae adorn each fender. Rally wheels 15 x 7 front, and 15 x 8 rear. The front fenders sport a pair of airbrushed V8 cross flag insignias.

Interior
Interior upholstery has a black/silver combination and carpeting is very clean, and in near mint condition. Air conditioning is a vintage add on and utilizes the stock control panel. An AM radio is installed, operational, but not hooked up to current 12-volt system. Dash gauges were replaced with Auto Meter units. A LeCarra steering wheel is smooth and shows little wear. A volt meter, and transmission temperature gauge have been added under the dash. Headliner is very clean, no sags or rips. The car has a backup alarm, and backup camera which store under the seat.

Drivetrain
A rebuilt 348ci engine has 10.1 pistons, a mild comp cam, Crowler cam-save lifters, a new timing chain and gears. Fuel is delivered through 3 2-barrel carburetors. A new oil pump has been installed. Cylinder heads were reconditioned with new valve springs, and stainless-steel valves to accommodate the use of lead free gas. A Pertronix electronic distributor, new fuel pump, auxiliary electric fuel pump, a mechanical fan, and an electronic fan for high mode, are a few of the upgrades on the engine. Bow Tie Overdrives provided the 700 R-4 transmission and it has overdrive. The completely rebuilt driveshaft includes a heavy-duty center support, and links to a 3:55 to 1 positraction differential. Stopping power is provided by power drum brakes. Steering is effortless with a Borgensen power steering system. This Impala has independent front suspension, and coil spring rear. It has also been equipped with a performance dual exhaust system.

This stunning example of a carefully restored 1961 Impala, is truly reliable in performance, wrapped within an original restored body. A wonderful mix of stock to the car, and high-end upgrade aftermarket parts, come together to create what is truly “Black Cherry”.
