1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith II

1979 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II

There are automobiles…and then there is the Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II. So luxurious, it qualified as a limousine. With its individually longer wheelbase, the ride was remarkably smooth…the sophisticated self-leveling system kept the Silver Wraith II at optimum ride height regardless of the load. The Silver Wraith II was the most formal of all Rolls Royce saloons. It was among the first of the ultra-luxury saloons to crack the $100,000 USD mark. The Silver Wraith II augmented the model hierarchy as the company Flagship.

For consignment, a Silver Wraith II with its extended wheelbase which in turn increased rear seat passenger legroom. The added inches to the body shell was anonymously added to the rear doors to retain the appearance of the standard saloon. This Silver Wraith II is formal and suitable for a chauffeur. A masterpiece of hand-built craftsmanship. it was produced from 1977 until 1980 with a production total of only 2,154 vehicles.

Exterior
Extra long and of course the lap of luxury for this 1979 version of the Silver Wraith II. The word wraith is defined as a wisp or faint trace of something, call it ghost-like. This silver, Silver Wraith II has well minded gaps and a coating of paint that shows some dings and chips, as well as cracking near the trim seams. Paint retains its shine, and still presents nicely, just not perfectly. Leading the way is the iconic vertical ribbed Greek temple styled front grille in stainless steel. A flying lady is topping the grille and the RR badge is in excellent condition. Dual horizontal headlights flank this grille and nicely rounded front quarters round over and push further forward than the headlights to add some extra front-end texture, sporting the turn signal and parking lighting. A black 5 mph crash bumper is below. Working our way rearward on the long hood, a few bump ups emulate the headlights and central grille. Miles of front quarter panel wrap standard Rolls wheel covers with white sidewall tires. A trim spear runs the gamut of the sides of this car, as does a thin rocker trimming. The top is covered with a blue Everflex Vinyl which presents nicely with just a few rust bubbles underneath just above the rear deck. Tinted glass is all around for extra privacy. On the back are vertically oriented tail lighting, which is very similar to the front quarter lighting leading the way.

Interior
Limousine-style luxury abounds inside the Silver Wraith II. The richness of Lombardy walnut veneers grace the fascia and door capping garnish rails adding warmth to the cabin. Individually adjustable front seating was contoured for comfort. Upholstered in supple natural grain leather by Connolly Brothers, each cabin was unique and one of a kind and made custom to each new order. Wilton hand-tufted 100% wool carpet in blue and looking great, along with lamb's wool rugs are luxuriously underfoot. Front and rear seat head restraints added further to the comfort and convenience of the Silver Wraith II. Our version presents in a deep blue, and the leather has aged nicely with a fine patina overall and some cracking and folds in the leather, with a wear area near the seam of the insert and the bolster on the driver's seat. For the rear passengers, plenty of room on the floor for your legs and feet, and even fold down carpeted footrests are available conveniently in the backs of the front big buckets. A nice and tight headliner and side pillar linings are beautifully preserved in this interior and presenting an off white. Among its myriad standard amenities were: power windows, centralized power door locking system with boot lock and power release, theft deterrent system, automatic speed control, courtesy lighting, and AM/FM stereo radio with Quadraphonic tape playing equipment. The Silver Wraith II is equipped as a limousine, so sit back and relax…we will arrive in 2 hours!

Drivetrain
Under the front hinged bonnet sits a 6.75 liter V8. It sports dual SU carburetors and a TH400 3-speed automatic. Overall, the engine bay is clean and the consignor states that recently installed new carbs, fuel lines, fuel filter, power steering pump, as well as a power steering pump have this car humming.

Undercarriage
Some road dirt and aging undercoating but certainly no rust areas are seen on this undercarriage. Rocker panel repair is evident as body filler is seen on the underside of said panels. Also, independent coil springs are on all 4 corners providing the ride, with power disc brakes providing the stopping from all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and decent idler, I was off to the test track in ultimate style and luxury. Here this performed nicely with smooth acceleration, a slightly rough ride, and plenty of conveniences to occupy my fingers! I noticed the passenger windows are a bit slow but still go up and down, the turn signals are non functional, and the car tends to burn oil leaving this Silver Wraith in a blue cloud.

A late 1970's example of what was a very expensive handmade custom order car. Chauffeur driven, plenty of conveniences and a nice overall look. Get on the phone to Jeeves and have him pull around to the front pedimented portico, and off to the Piggly Wiggly you go.
