1965 Plymouth Fury III Convertible

1965 Plymouth Fury III Convertible

There once was a time when the Chrysler Corporation was number two in sales, ahead of the formerly #1 Ford brand. However, a number of business miscalculations have forced Chrysler to be on the brink of disaster numerous times in its history. One of Chrysler's biggest boners was during the dawn of the muscle car era. But with some clever platform reshuffling for 1965 and the introduction of the new full-size C-body, the Chrysler Corporation was back in the saddle, and with the addition of the Commando 426 for the Plymouth Fury, Chrysler had its first “proper” full-size muscle car.

For consignment the 1965 Plymouth Fury III in 2 door convertible form. The III designation which gives us a full length aluminum body molding, dual tail lights and backup lights, a parking brake warning light, an electric clock, and illumination for the glovebox and trunk. This example is in very nice condition, has a 318ci V8 Poly 2bbl, and a 3-speed automatic. Plus, it's a convertible! Let the sun shine in!!!

Exterior
Borrowing from the Pontiac upfront we see stacked dual headlights, a snappy chromed egg crate grille, near perfect badging, and a solid shiny bumper below. As we move rearward along the laser straight side panels, with gaps well minded we can follow the light blue trim spear which runs the length from stem to stern. All this straight steel is bathed in white paint and trimmings throughout are looking great! On top a near perfect light blue canvas convertible top that has a clear plastic rear window and moves up and down effortlessly. On back the dual taillights and backup lights are framed below by a fading and dimpled rear bumper. Standard wheel covers courtesy of Plymouth are wrapped by 60's thin whites on all 4 corners.

Interior
A swing of the doors and I've got the blues on my mind with yards of blue vinyl for the door panels and interior seating. It appears the seating has been refreshed and not the door panels as there is a slight color variation and it's holding its own for the visual. A split bench upfront and a full bench in back it all comes together with a matching tonneau cover. Up front, a two tone light and dark blue padded dash has some white plastic bezel inserts which house gauges. Some cracking is noted within this top padded part. The white has yellowed slightly but all remains clean and good looking. Below in a light blue metal painted panel all the knobs and sliders are inserted. Clean blue carpeting is noted throughout the floors.

Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and we are greeted by an unrestored engine bay that takes on a nice patina in its original form. Here we have a 318ci polyspherical V8 topped by a 2bbl carburetor, and a 3-speed Torqueflite automatic on the back. This transmission throws power rearward to an 8-3/4 rear axle.

Undercarriage
Noting some surface rust on the floor pans, rockers, various undercarriage suspension and frame parts but all remains structurally sound. There was at one time undercoating applied but has since mostly worn off. There does appear to be some invasive rust on the trunk undercarriage floor just above the exhaust piping. Front torsion bar suspension is seen and on back leaf sprung suspension is working like it should. Drum brakes are all around and a stock exhaust is installed.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and smooth runner when experiencing our test track. No noted issues during our drive, with smooth transmission shifts and nice ride and bias free braking on a panic stop. With top down a nice experience and a classic mid 1960's cruiser.

This '65 Plymouth is extremely cool and has been cared for and upgraded with replacement parts when needed. With its nice sized V8, tailored interior and dramatic styling, it represents the pinnacle of American styling and manufacturing dominance. If you're looking for a top-notch classic that'll draw a crowd wherever it goes, your search is over! Meet the 1965 Plymouth Fury III.
