1966 Cadillac DeVille Convertible

1966 Cadillac Deville Convertible

The name "DeVille" is derived from the French de la ville or de ville meaning "of the town". In French coach building parlance, a coupé de ville, from the French couper (to cut) i.e. shorten or reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside seat for two and an outside seat for the driver and this smaller vehicle was intended for use in the town or city (de ville).

They say everything is bigger in Texas, although this Caddy's presence in the Classic Auto Mall showroom, this writer would beg to differ. All 18.68 feet of this bundle of Detroit iron can whisk you down the road so smoothly you will not even know you are moving, all in extra stuffed leather comfort. This golden oldie is a nicely preserved example all in working condition. Plus, it is a drop topper for that wind in the hair experience of exhilaration and freedom on your drive.

Exterior
The obsession with chrome had ended and now in the mid 1960s it was still used, but only in key points of the overall construction. This Antique Gold repaint is not without the chrome jewelry in that the massive bumpers, vertical stacked head and vertical taillights, brite work have a goodly amount of it, and it all presents in nice condition. The black convertible top also in good condition, operates smoothly and quickly, and when dropped, reveals a massive passenger compartment. Speaking of plenty of real estate, the hood, and trunk lids are not worth sneezing at. The trunk when popped shows textured vinyl covering the floor of the trunk, and there is a large subwoofer near the cabin portion of the trunk, along with a spare tire and original jack. Never fear though, there is still room for mother in law's 13 bags she's bringing on her weeks stay at your house.

Interior
Beautiful Antique Saddle (like slightly red tinted chocolate…just delicious and deep) with plenty of padding split bench in front, and a full bench in the rear, major center flip up and down armrest, one is tempted to ask “where's the damn remote?” Talk about convenience options, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats, power up and down convertible, and climate control. Also added an aftermarket AM/FM/CD stereo residing in below the dash and just above it in the dedicated smokers option above the center dash…a hidden lighter, and dual ashtray convenience from a time when smoking was still safe. Beautiful thick pile antique saddle, (that delicious red tinted chocolate… I can't get that out of my mind!!), carpeting is on all floors and is very clean and unfaded. A stereo system has been installed as to extra speakers, however both radio head units are inoperable at the time of our test drive.

Drivetrain
Seated in what appears to be an original engine bay, the 429ci V8 topped with a 4-barrel carburetor, and attached to a 3-speed Turbo Hydromatic transmission, shifts smoothly, and even saves gas…. as if you care!

Undercarriage
The smooth ride courtesy of the independent coil spring front suspension, and 4 link with coil springs on the rear is nicely presenting with road dirt patina and no surface rust. Power drum brakes are all around and a like new exhaust system is noted snaking its way rearward on this large and in charge undercarriage.

Drive-Ability
She fired right up and after a nice warmup it gave me a nice slow boil on the test track…meaning nice acceleration, good handling for a large vehicle, and ultra-smooth ride. Braking is top notch and save for the radios not pumping out any sound, all else was in working order.

A resprayed exterior, nice chrome and brite work exterior, with loads of convenience options, and a convertible, wrapping an original unrestored engine bay, and underside/undercarriage. That about sums it up, except for its very special in its design, size and overall condition and deserves a serious look.
