1981 Fiat 2000 Spider Convertible

1981 Fiat 2000 Spider Convertible

Carrozzeria Pininfarina, an Italian car body design firm, put pencil to paper, and created the original Spider design in 1966. As the car and design evolved, a 2.0 liter engine made its way into the 1980 model year, and was marketed as the Spider 2000. A small but nimble sports car was meant to compete with the likes of Triumph, and MG, and this is evident in the look of the car, being an amalgamation between the 3 car companies.

This 1981 Fiat Spider 2000, showing up is rated a solid 3 (on a scale of 1-5). There is some minor rust bubbling thru in spots however there are no known mechanical problems, and exterior paint presents well. Interior presents in good condition and shows little wear. The engine is clean, runs well, and overall, the car is a nice 1980s sports car that could be a daily driver.

Exterior
Tan paint adorns the exterior surfaces. There are some slight faults about, but overall presents very nicely, with a good retained shine. All exterior chrome and lighting are in good condition, as well as the tan convertible top, which is very simple to put up and down. It also sports a clear plastic rear window. Pininfarina was a master at utilizing lines that contradicted themselves to create interest. In the back of the car, is a study in that design concept. An angled in trunkline with the angled out taillights is an excellent example of this theory in practice. Seen on the back bumper on the lower portion is some invasive rust working the bottom of both sides of this bumper.

Interior
Interior features tan leather bucket seats, gold pile carpeting, a black vinyl dash framing a walnut veneer dashboard. Seats are of medium height and show slight sag in the vinyl particularly on the seats portion, just from everyday wear. There is also a small 2 plus 2 rear seat with virtually no legroom, and it appears in a tan shade of leather. Anodized aluminum black rings surround all instruments, and a tan vinyl and wood appliqué center console houses various climate controls, as well as a handbrake and manual shift lever. Blaupunkt supplies the AM/FM/Cassette stereo and is mounted seamlessly into the dash. Tan carpeting with gold mats floods the floors and remains clean.

Drivetrain
A Lampredi I4 fuel injected aluminum head with cast iron block powers this sports car and produces approximately 77 HP. 5 speeds for the manual transmission allows the driver to experience the melodious tune of the exhaust as they go through the gears, that is quintessential Fiat 4-cylinder. 3.90 gears for the rear axle setup, and all is corrosion free and looking excellent under the hood.

Undercarriage
Slight surface rust on the rockers but otherwise plenty of patina and black unibody construction which is structurally solid. Independent coil springs for the front suspension, and a 4 link with coil springs for the back. Disc brakes are all around. A new stock style exhaust is also noted underneath.

Drive-Ability
This 1981 Spider 2000 is literally a consignment that can be driven out of the showroom and enjoyed immediately and we did! Handling, performance, and the wind in your hair, will give you the satisfaction you are in an Italian sports car, and loving it. Smooth on the power, good solid braking on the panic stopping, and a snappy handler of a sports car I'd say from my experience.

With its Pininfarina lines, and overall good condition, this is a neat little car to have some fun with. It looks great, runs even greater, and is comfortable to sit in and drive. Meticulously cared for and loved by its second owner who purchased the car in 1983 and has had a love affair with ever since. Care to cut in now?!
